Volkswagen Tera: The Upcoming Skoda Kylaq-Based SUV Set To Launch In 2025
Volkswagen has unveiled the name of its upcoming sub-4-meter SUV, which will be based on the Skoda Kylaq platform. This new compact vehicle, named the Volkswagen Tera, is set to launch in Brazil in 2025 before making its way to India. The Volkswagen Tera aims to compete in the expanding sub-4-meter SUV market by offering a stylish and compact option that blends modern design with premium features.
Though the Tera will be based on the Skoda Kylaq, it will feature unique design elements that align with Volkswagen's signature style. These include a new grille, lighting elements, bumpers, and a redesigned tailgate. This collaboration mirrors previous partnerships like the Kushaq/Taigun and Slavia/Virtus, bringing Volkswagen's distinct flair to a proven platform.

Volkswagen Tera's Engine and Features
Under the bonnet, the Volkswagen Tera is expected to house a 1.0-liter turbo petrol engine similar to that of the Skoda Kylaq. This engine delivers 115 hp, making it suitable for both city driving and highway journeys. The Tera will likely offer premium features such as advanced connectivity options, safety technology, and a spacious interior.
Volkswagen plans to equip the Tera with its latest infotainment system. It may also include high-end features like connected car technology, customizable driving modes, and a premium audio system. These additions reflect Volkswagen's commitment to quality and enhancing user experience.

Volkswagen's decision to enter the sub-4-meter SUV segment was influenced by shifting market dynamics. Initially focused on electric vehicles for India by 2028, Volkswagen adjusted its strategy due to slowing EV sales and growing demand for compact SUVs. The inclusion of ICE models like the Tera aligns with these changing priorities.
Despite entering a crowded segment late, the sub-4-meter SUV category remains one of the fastest-growing markets. Volkswagen's entry supports its "India 2.5" project—a Rs 2,276 crore initiative aimed at increasing plant utilization and achieving economies of scale.

After earlier challenges with models like the Ameo, Volkswagen was cautious about entering this segment again.
