New Volkswagen Passat Awarded Five Stars In Euro NCAP Safety Assessment
The new Passat has earned the highest rating of five stars in the Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme). This accolade places it among the top-rated mid-sized models of 2024. The ninth generation of Volkswagen’s best-selling Passat continues its legacy with this achievement.
Volkswagen's Passat, now exclusively available as an estate model, impressed Euro NCAP experts with numerous safety innovations. The vehicle excelled in all four assessed categories, achieving its best result in Adult Occupant Protection with a rating of 93 per cent. It also scored highly in Child Occupant Protection (87 per cent), Vulnerable Road Users (83 per cent), and Safety Assist (80 per cent).

The Passat includes many assist systems as standard, even at the entry level. These features include Side Assist, Lane Assist, ACC stop & go, oncoming vehicle braking when turning, Park Distance Control, Rear View camera system, Dynamic Road Sign Display using the front camera, and LED headlights and tail light clusters.
One notable feature is Autonomous Emergency Braking Front Assist with Pedestrian and Cyclist Monitoring. This system enhances protection for vulnerable road users during potential collisions. Additionally, the exit warning system can prevent occupants from opening doors when another road user is approaching from behind.
The Passat places significant emphasis on child safety. In both frontal and side impact tests, it provided excellent protection for all critical body areas of child dummies. The car was awarded the maximum score for child occupant protection.
Since 2023, Euro NCAP test criteria have become stricter. New requirements include detecting children left in the car—a criterion met by the new Passat generation.
Technological Advancements
The Passat features Car2X technology, allowing it to exchange information about local hazards with other vehicles and traffic infrastructure. This technology enhances overall safety by providing real-time data on potential dangers.
Volkswagen's commitment to safety extends beyond just technological advancements. The company ensures that every aspect of the vehicle is designed to protect both occupants and other road users effectively.
Popularity and Sales
The Passat has been a bestseller for over 50 years, with more than 34 million units sold globally. In Europe, the estate version has been particularly popular. In Germany alone, the Passat Variant topped mid-sized class rankings in 2023 with 45,494 new registrations.
Volkswagen Passenger Cars operates globally with production facilities in 12 countries across 29 locations. In 2023, Volkswagen delivered approximately 4.9 million cars worldwide. Their lineup includes popular models like Polo, T-Roc, T-Cross, Golf, Tiguan, and Passat alongside successful all-electric ID family models.
