Volkswagen Enhances In-Car Experience With ChatGPT In Latest Models
Volkswagen has integrated ChatGPT into its new-generation infotainment system, enhancing the capabilities of its IDA voice assistant. This AI-based tool is now available in all new ID. models, as well as the latest Golf, Tiguan, and Passat vehicles. Customers can interact with their cars using natural language, receiving a wide range of information beyond traditional voice control.
Volkswagen's collaboration with Cerence Inc., a leader in automotive AI solutions, has enabled this integration. The AI tool allows users to have search results read out loud and interact with the vehicle more intuitively. Kai Grünitz, Member of the Brand Board of Management responsible for Development, emphasised Volkswagen's commitment to making advanced technologies accessible to a broad audience.

Current Volkswagen models already support voice control for infotainment, navigation, and climate systems via the IDA assistant. With ChatGPT, users can now obtain information on tourist attractions, past football tournaments, and even solve maths problems without taking their eyes off the road.
Volkswagen customers with existing VW Connect or VW Connect Plus accounts can use the enhanced IDA voice assistant without needing additional access or apps. The assistant is activated by saying "Hello IDA" or pressing a button on the steering wheel. If a query cannot be answered by Volkswagen's system, it is forwarded anonymously to ChatGPT, which then provides a response in the familiar Volkswagen voice.
Data protection is a priority; ChatGPT does not gain access to vehicle data, and questions and answers are deleted immediately to ensure privacy. The online voice assistant can be deactivated through the Volkswagen app or the infotainment system’s privacy settings.
Multilingual Support
The technology supports five languages: English (US), English (UK), Spanish, Czech, and German. This feature was first showcased at CES 2024 in January. The integration of ChatGPT into Volkswagen vehicles is part of a broader strategy to enhance user experience through innovative technologies.
