Volkswagen Group Utilises Real-Time Data To Enhance Traffic Safety For All Road Users
The Volkswagen Group is set to enhance traffic safety by using sensor and image data from customer vehicles. This initiative aims to optimise driver assistance systems and automated driving functions. Customers will receive these improvements through software updates, provided they consent to data usage. The project will begin in Germany in late 2024, initially involving Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Audi models.
High-quality data from real-world traffic situations are crucial for refining these advanced assistance systems. Developers focus on specific scenarios where such systems prove most beneficial. Data transfer is triggered only in narrowly defined situations like emergency braking or sudden evasive actions. Continuous data transfer does not occur, ensuring privacy and security.

Data collection may impact other road users, including pedestrians and cyclists. Camera-based systems must accurately classify objects even in challenging conditions. All data protection regulations are strictly followed, ensuring individual privacy is maintained. Information about people in the traffic environment is not relevant to the data collected.
CARIAD's cloud platform facilitates secure data transfer from vehicles to a protected area. Initially, Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Audi models with E3 1.1 and E3 1.2 architectures will support image data transfer. This includes the all-electric ID. model family from Volkswagen and new Audi models like the Q6 e-tron and A6 e-tron.
Customer consent is essential for data processing, with options available in their profiles to grant or revoke permission at any time. The brands will design consent processes individually, ensuring flexibility for customers. The initiative's success relies on customer participation and adherence to privacy standards.
The Volkswagen Group's extensive fleet already contributes significantly to traffic safety by generating high-resolution maps using anonymised swarm data. This collective intelligence aids vehicles with lane guidance where road markings are absent, offering precise driving instructions based on local weather conditions.

Other Volkswagen Group brands plan to join this initiative gradually, preparing their product portfolios accordingly. As more brands participate, the scope of enhanced safety features will expand across a broader range of vehicles, benefiting more customers worldwide.
