Volkswagen Group Of America Launches New Gulf Coast Hub In Freeport, Texas With Significant Job Creation
Volkswagen Group of America (VWGoA) has inaugurated a new port facility at Port Freeport, Texas. This Gulf Coast hub represents an investment of approximately $114 million and has created over 110 direct jobs. The facility will import and process up to 140,000 vehicles annually for brands like Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Porsche. It supports around 300 dealers in the Central and Western United States.
The wider channels at Port Freeport accommodate larger liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels. This advancement aligns with VWGoA's sustainability goals. Anu Goel, Executive Vice President of Group After Sales & Services at VWGoA, stated, "Opening this new port facility in Freeport helps create a more resilient and more sustainable supply chain for many years to come." The port's enhanced access to rail and trucking also streamlines logistics operations.
Port Freeport is a key player in exporting crude oil and natural gas liquids. Nationally, it ranks sixth in chemicals and fifteenth in total foreign waterborne tonnage. A 2022 Economic Impact Study by Texas A&M Transportation Institute highlighted that the Freeport Harbor Channel generates 266,300 jobs nationwide with an economic output of $157.3 billion.
VWGoA consolidated two smaller facilities in Houston and Midlothian to establish this new location. Now operating seven ports across the U.S., VWGoA's other ports include Baltimore, MD; Benicia, CA; Davisville, RI; Jacksonville, FL; San Diego, CA; and Chattanooga, TN.
KDC and PRP collaborated with VWGoA and Port Freeport to develop the site. To enhance local talent development, VWGoA partnered with Brazosport College in Lake Jackson to create a credentialed program focusing on Vehicle Logistics operations. This initiative aims to support future job opportunities in transportation, storage, and distribution across Brazoria County.
PRP is a real estate investment management company specializing in mission-critical corporate headquarters facilities leased to investment-grade companies. Its portfolio includes logistic facilities for Amazon and VW among others. Founded in 2005, PRP manages assets worth over $6 billion across various property sectors.
