Exploring Volkswagen's Future Design With Andreas Mindt At SMMT Test Day

Milton Keynes – Volkswagen is offering media guests at this year’s SMMT Test Day a unique opportunity to meet the brand’s Head of Design, Andreas Mindt. Andreas, who joined Volkswagen in 2023, will present two talks at the event, both inside the Millbrook Proving Ground’s Concept Centre. These sessions are scheduled for 12.30pm and 1.15pm.

Andreas will discuss how he and his design team are shaping the future design philosophy of Volkswagen. He will be accompanied by the ID. GTI Concept, an all-electric hot hatch that garnered attention when unveiled at last year’s IAA Mobility in Munich. This model is slated for production in 2026.

Volkswagen's Design Future Revealed

During his presentations, Andreas will highlight key elements of Volkswagen design using the ID. GTI concept as a reference point. Each talk will also feature a short Q&A session. Attendance is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Away from the design talks, the Volkswagen UK press team will be present at the main Volkswagen stand. The stand will feature barista coffee, a celebratory Golf display marking 50 years of the iconic model, and five of Volkswagen’s latest models available for test drives. These include the Passat, Tiguan, ID.7, T-Cross, and ID. Buzz.

Andreas Mindt began his career with the Volkswagen Group in 1996 after graduating from Pforzheim University School of Design. By 2014, he had held several positions at Volkswagen, contributing to the design of the first generation Tiguan and the exterior design of the Golf 7.

From 2014 to 2021, Andreas led Audi’s exterior design realignment, working on models from the Audi A1 to the Audi e-tron GT1 and from the Audi Q3 to the Audi Q8. In 2021, he became Director of Bentley Design in Crewe, where he defined Bentley’s new design language unveiled with the Bentley Batur in 2022.

Andreas succeeded Jozef Kabaň as Volkswagen’s Head of Design in Wolfsburg on 1 February 2023.

In 2023, a total of 162,087 new Volkswagen passenger vehicles were registered in the UK according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This represented a market share of 8.52 per cent – an increase of 0.35 per cent compared with the previous year – making Volkswagen the UK’s best-selling new-car brand for the third consecutive year.

The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand has a global presence, producing vehicles at 29 locations in 12 countries and employing approximately 170,000 people. In 2023, Volkswagen delivered around 4.87 million vehicles worldwide. These included popular models such as the Polo, T-Roc, T-Cross, Golf, Tiguan and Passat, as well as successful all-electric ID. models.

Volkswagen handed over about 394,000 all-electric vehicles to customers worldwide in 2023 and is consistently advancing its ambition to become a leading brand for sustainable mobility through its ACCELERATE strategy.
