Volkswagen Launches Special Balloon To Celebrate Golf’s 50th Anniversary
A hot-air balloon celebrating '50 Years of Golf' soared over Cappadocia, Turkey, this week to commemorate the significant milestone. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Volkswagen Golf, which has sold 37 million units across eight generations, making it Volkswagen's best-selling car and an automotive icon.
Volkswagen launched a special birthday balloon on Sunday (1 September) at 06:00 local time. The uniquely designed hot-air balloon joined hundreds of others in Cappadocia's famous dawn skyline. The Sultan Series PH-370 balloon flew above Love Valley with 16 passengers onboard, accompanied by an original Golf Mk I and the newly revised Golf Mk 8.
The event attracted thousands of tourists who gather daily to witness this 'bucket-list' attraction. A select group of global media will also experience flights in the balloon throughout the week while test-driving every generation of the Volkswagen Golf, from the original Mk I to the new Mk 8, all set against a backdrop of birthday balloons.
The original Golf Mk I design was created by legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and debuted in 1974. Over eight generations and 50 years, it has evolved into Volkswagen’s most successful car, with over 37 million units sold worldwide. Few cars can claim to define their own segment as effectively as the Golf while staying true to its original design philosophy.
Mike Orford, Head of PR and Communications at Volkswagen UK, remarked: "The Golf is celebrating a major milestone this year – a phenomenal 50 years of production. So what better way to celebrate such a significant moment than with a sky-full of giant birthday balloons? Very few manufacturers can claim to have such an iconic model that has evolved and innovated over eight generations, so we thought it was definitely something worth celebrating in style."

The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand operates globally, producing vehicles at 29 locations in 12 countries and employing around 170,000 people. In 2023 alone, Volkswagen delivered approximately 4.87 million vehicles worldwide.
