Vehicle Recalls In The UK Predicted To Exceed 250 In 2024, Affecting Up To 1.8 Million Cars

In 2024, UK drivers are expected to face over 250 vehicle recalls, potentially affecting up to 1.8 million cars, according to data from The Car Expert and predictions by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). The first eight months alone have seen more than 170 separate recalls issued. As vehicles become more technologically advanced, the frequency of recalls and safety concerns has risen.

Mercedes-Benz leads in the number of recalls this year with 16 incidents affecting over 337,000 vehicles. However, some brands have managed to avoid any recalls so far. The Car Expert has integrated recall data into its Expert Rating Index, allowing consumers to easily check if a vehicle has been recalled and if repairs have been completed.

UK Vehicle Recalls Expected to Surge in 2024

The Car Expert's analysis reveals a significant increase in vehicle recalls over the past 30 years. In 1994, only 27 passenger car recalls were recorded by the DVSA. This number has surged more than tenfold by 2024. Predictions suggest that by the end of this year, there could be as many as 260 recalls impacting up to 1.8 million vehicles.

Recalls can vary in severity, from minor maintenance adjustments to serious 'Stop Drive' orders where vehicles must not be driven until fixed. The DVSA issues recalls primarily for safety concerns, but manufacturers may also conduct voluntary recalls for non-safety issues.

This year, BMW Group recalled about 1.5 million cars globally due to a potential braking issue, including Rolls-Royce and Mini models. This recall is estimated to cost the company $1 billion and resulted in a ten percent drop in market value last week.

In the UK alone, Mercedes-Benz has recalled over 337,000 passenger cars for various problems. Notably, older models like Audi A4s from as far back as 2004 have also been affected by recalls this year.

The Role of The Car Expert

The Car Expert's Editorial Director Stuart Masson emphasises the importance of addressing recalls promptly due to their potential risks. "Recalls in the UK are a serious matter because the DVSA only issues them when there are safety concerns," he stated.

The Car Expert aims to assist drivers by providing clear guidance on recall processes and necessary actions. Their platform now includes DVSA recall information within its award-winning Expert Rating Index for each car model.

Diverse Manufacturer Recalls

This year alone, 41 different car manufacturers have issued recalls in the UK. These range from budget brands like Dacia and Fiat to luxury names such as Koenigsegg and Rolls-Royce. The inclusion of recall data enhances The Car Expert’s comprehensive analysis of expert opinion and real-world data.

The Expert Rating Index evaluates nearly 550 cars from 55 manufacturers using over 20 million data points. It incorporates independent reviews, Euro NCAP safety data, reliability statistics, and five-year running costs for a thorough assessment.

The Car Expert continues to serve as a trusted resource for automotive advice since its establishment in 2011. It reaches over two million readers annually with unbiased guidance on purchasing and owning both new and used cars.
