Record Growth In Used EV Market As Consumer Demand Soars

The first quarter of the year has seen the used electric vehicle (EV) market experience a notable surge in growth, highlighting its increasing maturity and appeal among consumers. According to Ian Plummer, Commercial Director at Auto Trader, the overall retail market swiftly recovered from the seasonal slowdown typically observed around the festive period. This rebound was characterized by robust consumer demand, culminating in a record-breaking 89 million visits to Auto Trader's marketplace in March. This period also saw used cars selling at unprecedented speeds, setting a positive tone for the start of the year.

Plummer notes that this momentum has not only continued into the second quarter, with average sales climbing over 6% in April, but also suggests a resilient outlook for the used car market despite potential challenges. These challenges include a constrained supply chain and an uncertain economic and political landscape. Yet, the resilience of the used car market seems well-poised to withstand these hurdles.

Used EV Market Hits New Highs

One of the standout trends of Q1 was the significant growth spurt within the used EV sector. Demand for used electric vehicles surged, with these vehicles selling 15 days faster in March than in the previous year. Used EVs now represent nearly 10% of all enquiries for sub-five-year-old cars sent to retailers via Auto Trader. This shift is indicative of a growing consumer interest in more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation options.

The pricing dynamics of the used EV market are also evolving. Electric vehicle prices are beginning to stabilize, with a third of used models now available for under £20,000. This price point is notably less than half the average cost of a new electric vehicle, making the second-hand market an increasingly attractive option for buyers looking to transition to electric mobility. Furthermore, many used electric models have reached price parity with their petrol and diesel counterparts, which has significantly contributed to their growing sales figures.

Plummer's insights underscore the attractiveness of affordably priced EVs and suggest a bright future for the used electric vehicle market. As prices level off and consumer demand remains strong, the second-hand EV market is set to offer a viable and appealing alternative for those looking to make the switch to electric driving.
