Make Strong Hybrid Cars Affordable: UP's Road Tax Waiver
The Union Minister expressed a desire to reduce GST on hybrid cars to make them more affordable. However, the Finance Ministry rejected this proposal to promote EV sales. In contrast, Uttar Pradesh has waived road tax on strong hybrid cars, making them more accessible.

Espirit Toyota, a well-known dealership in Uttar Pradesh, announced on social media that buyers of strong hybrid models like the Toyota Innova Hycross, Toyota Hyryder, and Toyota Camry are exempt from paying road tax.
The post highlighted benefits of up to Rs 4.4 lakh for the Toyota Camry, Rs 2 lakh for the Toyota Hyryder, and Rs 3.10 lakh for the Innova Hycross. The high-end MPV Vellfire also qualifies for this offer.
This exemption is not exclusive to Toyota vehicles. The Uttar Pradesh government has extended the road tax waiver to other strong hybrids such as the Maruti Suzuki Invicto, Grand Vitara, and Honda City Hybrid. Residents with address proof from Uttar Pradesh can take advantage of these savings.
Why Strong Hybrid?
A strong hybrid car combines a petrol engine with an electric motor. Unlike mild hybrids that assist only at low speeds, strong hybrids can be powered by either or both engines. This system enhances fuel efficiency and reduces emissions compared to regular petrol cars.
When starting a strong hybrid vehicle, the electric motor propels it forward before switching seamlessly to the petrol engine at higher speeds. The battery recharges automatically while driving and includes an EV-only mode where the car runs solely on electric power.
The flexibility of strong hybrids makes them appealing in India, where charging infrastructure is limited and range anxiety is common among potential EV buyers. Strong hybrids do not require frequent stops for charging, offering a practical alternative.
People considering regular petrol versions might find strong hybrids more attractive due to minimal price differences after discounts. Although currently limited to Uttar Pradesh dealerships, neighbouring states may adopt similar incentives soon.
