UNO Car Party To Debut In Over 500,000 BMW And MINI Vehicles For Enhanced In-Car Entertainment
Mattel, Inc., AirConsole, and BMW Group have announced that the classic card game UNO will soon be available for in-car gaming. This new feature will debut at gamescom 2024 in Cologne, Germany. Visitors to the AirConsole booth will be able to try out UNO Car Party! in the new BMW X3. The game will be accessible in over 500,000 BMW and MINI vehicles starting August 21st.
UNO Car Party! has been adapted specifically for in-car gaming through a collaboration between Mattel, AirConsole, and BMW Group. The game can be played by up to four passengers using their personal devices as controllers. This setup allows each player to view their cards privately on their phones while playing on the car's infotainment system. Vehicles must be stationary for gameplay to commence.
Stephan Durach, Senior Vice President of BMW Group Development Connected Company and Technical Operations, expressed his enthusiasm: "We continue to increase the value of the overall digital experience for our customers. Our partners AirConsole and Mattel are helping make in-car gaming into a new social experience, and I am thrilled to offer a family-favorite game like UNO for this exciting innovation."
The partnership between BMW Group and AirConsole began in 2022, aiming to bring innovative gameplay experiences to BMW vehicles. Since then, the selection of games has expanded, including popular titles like "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?". These games are available on current models with BMW/MINI Operating System 9 or BMW Operating System 8.5 in combination with specific digital packages.
Anthony Cliquot, CEO of AirConsole, highlighted the unique integration: "UNO beautifully illustrates the strengths of AirConsole with a game accessible to everyone, a bespoke integration to the car hardware and our phone-controlled gaming experience. Each player can secretly see their own cards on their phone while playing on the infotainment system of the car."
Global Availability
The rollout of UNO Car Party! will reach over 500,000 vehicles across various regions including Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. Specific availability depends on the vehicle model and operating system version. For instance, it is available with Personal eSIM and BMW Operating System 8.5 in countries like Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Thailand, South Africa, India, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia but not in certain models like BMW 2 Series Coupe.
Erika Winterholler from Mattel emphasised UNO's suitability for this new platform: "UNO is perfect for in-car gaming because it's highly engaging and brings people together. Its simple rules are easy to learn and endlessly captivating, making it ideal for both short pit stops and extended play sessions."
Legacy of UNO
Over its five-decade history, UNO has remained popular due to its simple yet engaging gameplay that transcends languages and cultures. The game continues to evolve with new offerings such as mobile games and live gaming events. It also promotes inclusivity through products like UNO Braille.
This latest innovation aims to enhance road trips by providing an entertaining activity during breaks or rest periods. By integrating UNO into vehicles' infotainment systems via AirConsole’s platform, families and friends can enjoy this timeless game in a modern setting.
The introduction of UNO Car Party! marks another step forward in making digital experiences more enjoyable for vehicle occupants. As technology advances within automotive entertainment systems, collaborations like these highlight how traditional games can find new life through innovative platforms.
