An unexpected car repair bill of £772 is enough to make many UK drivers consider replacing their vehicle, according to a recent report. CarGurus, a prominent automotive marketplace in the UK, conducted a survey of 1,000 car owners without warranties. The findings revealed that unexpected costs and issues often push drivers to think about buying a new car instead of repairing their current one.
Drivers are generally willing to tolerate fewer than three faults and spend an average of £772 on unplanned repairs over the next year. They are also only prepared to wait up to 10 days for these repairs. If they reach their "breaking point," they would spend an average of £14,320 on a new vehicle, which is significantly more than the cost of fixing existing problems.
The survey highlighted that reliability and cost are the main reasons drivers want to replace their old cars. Safety concerns and the ability to afford a better vehicle also play roles in this decision. Additionally, 50% of UK car owners have made unexpected trips to the garage in the past year, spending an average of £269 annually on unplanned repairs.
Besides unplanned expenses, planned maintenance like servicing and M.O.T.s costs drivers an additional £427 per year. Due to these costs, 40% of respondents delay repairs, leading to issues such as dashboard warning lights and worn tyres. Nearly three-quarters of those surveyed feel stressed by the prospect of unexpected repairs.
CarGurus identified several car brands perceived as reliable by British drivers: Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford, Honda, Volvo, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Nissan, and Hyundai. Chris Knapman from CarGurus noted that while unexpected expenses can occur, upgrading to a car with a long manufacturer-backed warranty is feasible within most budgets.
To assist consumers further, CarGurus experts have pinpointed vehicles with long warranties that cater to various needs. These range from city cars like the Suzuki Ignis to family-friendly options like the Toyota Rav 4. Each recommendation considers factors such as style, efficiency, and remaining warranty coverage.

The Suzuki Ignis stands out as a stylish city car with low running costs and ample space for four people. For those seeking affordability and ease of driving, the Hyundai i20 is recommended. Families might prefer the spacious Toyota Rav 4 or Kia Carens for larger groups.
For those interested in electric vehicles (EVs), the MG5 EV offers great value with over 200 miles range and family-friendly space. The Lexus IS combines style with hybrid efficiency for luxury seekers. Meanwhile, the Kia Ceed SW Estate provides vast boot space for large loads.
