Cost Of Living Crisis Hits UK Families Planning Summer Days Out
Nearly seven in ten parents (69%) are worried about the cost of family outings, as revealed by a Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles survey. The study shows that 80% of UK parents use cars for these trips. To help, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers tips for saving money on the road.
The survey highlights that the average cost of a family day out is £93, totalling over £400 during school holidays. Despite three-quarters (77%) wanting fortnightly outings, high costs mean one in five (18%) have no plans for the holidays.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles commissioned Jo Studholme, a Parenting Expert, to provide affordable activity ideas for families. The study indicates that 80% of UK parents prefer car travel for family outings. The Multivan from Volkswagen offers features like seven seats and a communal table to keep families entertained on the go.
The research also reveals that escalating activity costs (52%), finding affordable trips (50%), and planning educational outings (32%) are major concerns for parents. These financial strains leave many struggling to afford regular family days out.
Jo Studholme shares her top ten tips for budget-friendly activities with children. She emphasises outdoor activities like exploring local parks, forests, and beaches. Packing a picnic or going on scavenger hunts can provide free entertainment.
Craft projects using recycled materials like cardboard boxes and egg cartons are another cost-effective way to engage children. Creating nature collages from leaves and twigs can also be fun and educational.
Exploring Local Areas and Libraries
Staycations offer another affordable option. Families can explore their own city or town, visit historical landmarks, or enjoy backyard camping. Local bike rides with ice cream stops or visits to swimming pools are great ways to stay active without spending much.
Libraries are valuable resources offering free story time events, book borrowing, and educational programmes. These activities can keep children engaged without adding to the family's expenses.
Volkswagen's Commitment to Families
The survey shows that one in ten families (14%) might spend over £600 during summer holidays due to rising activity costs. As a result, 18% of respondents have no planned family outings this summer.
"Family days out offer more than just entertainment," says Jo Studholme. "They contribute to child development and strengthen family bonds. By involving everyone in planning and embracing adventure, families can enjoy enriching days out without overspending."
