UK's Green Bus Investment Surges, Marking Europe's Largest Sustainable Fleet Expansion

The British bus market has seen a significant rise, with new registrations increasing by 61.7% in the second quarter of 2024. This marks the fifth consecutive quarter of growth, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The total number of new buses, coaches, and minibuses reached 1,826 units during this period.

Government initiatives have played a crucial role in this growth. Measures like the Bus Fare Cap Grant have stimulated demand. This has helped restore operator confidence after the pandemic caused a sharp decline in ridership levels.

Zero emission buses now make up a quarter of all new registrations, maintaining the UK's position as Europe's largest market for these green vehicles. Registrations of zero emission buses increased by 36.3% to 424 units in Q2 2024. This growth is supported by government commitments such as England’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Area funding and Scotland's Zero Emission Bus Challenge Fund.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, stated, "A boost in uptake of new buses which provide mass mobility across the nation is also a boost for our economy and society, given the vital role these vehicles play – from commuting and staycations to transport for schools, charities and health and social care. At the same time, fleets continue to go green in rising numbers and, with suitably ambitious incentives and infrastructure is in place, buses and the communities which depend on them could be the UK’s first to reach net zero."

Growth was not uniform across all UK regions. England saw a 69.6% increase to 1,557 units, while Northern Ireland experienced a 54.8% rise to 48 units. Wales had the most substantial growth with an over seven-fold increase to 116 units from just 12 last year. Conversely, Scotland saw a decline of 36% to 105 units compared to Q2 last year.

The demand for minibuses nearly doubled, rising by 97.2% to 903 vehicles. These vehicles are essential for various services across the country, including schools and social care organisations. Double-decker bus deliveries also doubled, increasing by 100.5% to 387 units.

SMMT's Role in Automotive Industry

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) is one of the UK's largest trade associations representing the automotive industry. The sector contributes £93 billion turnover and £22 billion value added annually to the UK economy. It employs around 198,000 people directly in manufacturing and about 813,000 across the wider industry.

The UK automotive industry is integral to economic growth and achieving net zero goals. It accounts for 12% of total UK exports of goods with more than 140 countries importing UK-produced vehicles.

Challenges for Smaller Operators

Despite overall growth, smaller and rural bus operators face challenges in adopting zero emission vehicles due to funding constraints for both vehicle purchases and necessary infrastructure.

SMMT’s latest paper "Next Stop, Net Zero: The Route To A Decarbonised UK Bus Market" highlights the need for a clear timetable for all regions and operators to achieve net zero goals with long-term support accessible to fleets of all sizes.

The benefits of transitioning to zero emission buses are significant. They include improved local air quality, lower noise pollution, and enhanced customer experience.

The automotive sector supports jobs beyond manufacturing in areas like advertising, chemicals, finance, logistics, and steel industries.

The recent data underscores that buses are leading Britain's road vehicle decarbonisation efforts due to their depot-based routes making transition simpler compared to cars or trucks.

This continued growth reflects a gradual return of confidence among operators after pandemic-induced declines in ridership levels were mitigated by government measures aimed at stimulating demand.
