Turner Motorsport Achieves Podium Finish In Milestone IMSA Race At Laguna Seca
Laguna Seca, CA, witnessed a weekend of intense racing action as teams and drivers battled it out in the fourth race of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship on May 13, 2024. Among the notable performances, Turner Motorsport clinched second place in the GTD class, marking a significant milestone as the team completed its 557th race in a BMW car, setting a record for the most races by any BMW M Motorsport customer team.
BMW M Team RLL demonstrated competitive speed during the qualifying rounds with their two BMW M Hybrid V8s securing promising positions. However, the race unfolded with its share of challenges. Philipp Eng, starting from third in the #24 BMW M Hybrid V8, maintained his position until handing over to Jesse Krohn. A mishap in the final hour led to a pit stop for a rear-end change, relegating Krohn to finish ninth in the GTP class. Meanwhile, teammates Connor De Phillippi and Nick Yelloly faced their setbacks, finishing seventh after losing time due to a pit stop delay and an off-track incident.
In the GTD category, Robby Foley and Patrick Gallagher showcased their prowess by leading the class in their #557 BMW M4 GT3 following an early advantage. However, a late-race contact with a lapping GTP car saw them drop to second place, narrowly missing out on victory. The GTD PRO category saw Madison Snow and Bryan Sellers finishing seventh in their #1 BMW M4 GT3 from Paul Miller Racing.
Reflecting on the race, Connor De Phillippi expressed disappointment over the lost opportunities but remained optimistic about improving performance and procedures for future races. Philipp Eng echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the team's strong pace throughout the weekend despite falling back later in the race. Robby Foley lamented the late-race incident that cost them victory but acknowledged the importance of the points gained towards their championship campaign.
As teams and drivers regroup and analyze their performances, the focus shifts to Detroit for another chance at podium finishes and championship points. The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship continues to deliver thrilling motorsport action, with competitors keen on overcoming challenges and achieving success in one of North America's premier racing series.
