Toyota Urban SUV (Rebadged Maruti Suzuki EVX) Launch Details Revealed
Launch details of the Toyota Urban SUV, the Japanese car giant's version of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki EVX have been revealed. The Toyota Urban SUV will be manufactured at Suzuki's Gujarat production plant.
The new Urban SUV (if it does retain the name in production) guise was first revealed to the world late last year. The new Toyota Urban SUV sees Toyota and Suzuki expand their badge-shared vehicle cooperation into the EV space for the very first time.
As per the details revealed in the joint announcement by Suzuki and Toyota production of the new Toyota Urban SUV will start in Spring 2025 and it is expected to go on sale immediately afterwards in Q2 2025. The Toyota Urban SUV will feature the same underpinnings as its Maruti Suzuki siblings but will feature a different body up top.
The platform that underpins the upcoming Toyota Urban SUV and the Maruti Suzuki EVX along with the powertrain was jointly developed by Suzuki, Toyota and Daihatsu.
The 27PL skateboard platform will feature heavy localization with Maruti Suzuki and Toyota both trying to ensure that costs remain low to ensure the new EVs can compete with offerings from already established players like Tata and Mahindra.
Toyota's version of the bade-swapped SUV will feature four-wheel-drive from the get-go, and it will be interesting to see if Maruti Suzuki also goes down that path or not. The 60kWh battery pack is expected to be shared between the two EVs as well and is expected to deliver a range of around 550km on a single charge.
Speaking about the newest iteration of his firm's partnership with Toyota, Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki said, "Suzuki will supply our first BEV to Toyota globally. I am grateful that the collaboration between the two companies has further deepened in this way. While continuing to be competitors, we will deepen our collaborations toward solving social issues, including the realization of a carbon-neutral society through a multi-pathway approach."
Toyota President Koji Sato also gave his thoughts stating, "By leveraging the BEV unit and platform that we jointly developed, we will take a new step in our collaboration in the field of electrified vehicles. This will allow us to deliver various choices that contribute to a carbon-neutral society to customers worldwide. We would like to learn from each other's strengths, compete, and further joint efforts based on a multi-pathway approach."
Thoughts About The Toyota Urban SUV
The Toyota Urban SUV will be the first badge-engineered EV in the firm's partnership with Suzuki and could be a proper success story provided the firms get the price right for both their electric SUVs.While Toyota hasn't confirmed when we will get more details about the SUV, we do expect this to happen either at Auto Expo 2025 in January or at EV India Expo 2025 the following month.
