Toyota Prius Sets New World Record For Highest MPG In Coast-to-Coast U.S. Drive
The Prius has set a new benchmark for efficiency. Hypermiler Wayne Gerdes earned the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the lowest fuel consumption driving across the U.S. from coast to coast. This summer, Gerdes drove a Prius LE from Los Angeles City Hall to New York City Hall, achieving an impressive average of 93.158 MPG combined, surpassing the previous record in the mid-70s MPG.
Gerdes' journey covered 3,211.7 miles through diverse terrains and unpredictable weather. He navigated mountain elevations up to 7,000 feet and endured temperatures over 105 degrees in the Mojave Desert. Strong winds from the Gulf of Mexico also posed challenges, yet the Prius maintained remarkable efficiency.
Since its introduction over two decades ago as the first production hybrid car, the Prius has consistently delivered on its promise of high fuel economy by combining an electric motor with a high-efficiency engine. "The Prius has impressed us all for the past 23 years, and frankly, it continues to wow us today," said Michael Tripp, Toyota Vehicle Marketing group vice president.
The latest generation of Toyota Prius, released in 2023, features new sporty exterior styling and upgraded technology. It boasts up to an EPA-estimated 57 MPG combined and is powered by the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System with a 2.0L engine producing 194 horsepower on the FWD model.
Toyota's dedication to carbon neutrality is evident through its multi-pathway approach to powertrain technology. Since the Prius’ debut in the U.S. in 2000, Toyota has become synonymous with hybrid technology and now offers various powertrain options across nearly every segment.
By 2025, Toyota’s tenth plant in North Carolina will begin manufacturing automotive batteries for electrified vehicles. With more electrified vehicles on the road than any other automaker, Toyota currently offers 30 electrified options.
Expert Tips for Fuel Efficiency
Gerdes shared simple tips for improving fuel economy: slow take-offs from stops and maintaining even pressure on the accelerator pedal. He also recommends easing off the accelerator early when approaching stops and using momentum to glide towards them.
This world record was achieved by leveraging hypermiling techniques that optimized vehicle performance under specific conditions. While these results are not typical, basic fuel-efficient driving tips can help any driver improve their fuel economy.
Award-Winning Performance
The new-generation Prius has received numerous accolades including Car and Driver’s 10Best, MotorTrend Car of the Year, North American Car of the Year, and World Car Design of the Year. This GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title marks its 30th industry award.
