Toyota Partners With IONNA For Expansive EV Charging Network In North America
Toyota has joined forces with seven other automakers as an investor and founding partner of IONNA. This collaboration aims to install at least 30,000 charging ports in North America by 2030. Toyota and Lexus customers will benefit from access to a growing network of DC fast chargers, supporting both NACS and CCS charge ports.
IONNA's initiative to deploy high-powered charging stations aligns with Toyota's vision for electric mobility. Ted Ogawa, president and CEO of Toyota Motor North America, stated, "We believe this will not only promote the adoption of BEVs and increase customer confidence in the technology, but it will provide our Toyota and Lexus customers with access to IONNA’s rapidly growing charging network in North America."

IONNA plans to bring its first batch of DC fast charging stations online in 2024. The buildout will continue throughout the decade, ensuring widespread availability. Seth Cutler, CEO of IONNA, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: "Their vision for the future of electric mobility in North America aligns perfectly with our mission to push the boundaries for the highest standards of quality, reliability, and customer experience."
Toyota's involvement is part of a broader collaboration among eight OEMs investing in public charging infrastructure. Other manufacturers supporting IONNA include BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis. This collective effort underscores the industry's commitment to advancing sustainable transportation.
Toyota currently offers two mass-market BEVs in North America: the Toyota bZ4X and the Lexus RZ. The company has announced plans for two new three-row BEV SUVs to be assembled at its Kentucky and Indiana plants. By 2030, Toyota aims to offer 30 BEV models globally across its brands and produce up to 3.5 million BEVs annually.
IONNA's focus on customer experience includes providing amenities at charging stations. This holistic approach ensures convenience for users while their vehicles charge. The planned network will feature over 30,000 ultra-fast-and-reliable charging points by 2030.
