Toyota And Lexus Electrified Vehicle Sales Hit New Heights In First Half Of 2024

Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) reported U.S. sales of 193,120 vehicles in June 2024, a 1.2 percent decrease compared to June 2023. However, electrified vehicle sales for the month surged by 64.5 percent, totalling 84,781 units and representing 43.9 percent of total monthly sales.

In the first half of 2024, TMNA sold over 454,000 electrified vehicles, making up 38.3 percent of total sales volume. This period saw a significant increase of 67.9 percent in electrified vehicle sales compared to the previous year.

Toyota's Green Vehicle Sales Soar in 2024

The second quarter of 2024 was also strong for TMNA, with total U.S. sales reaching 621,549 vehicles, marking a 9.2 percent increase from the same period last year. Electrified vehicle sales in this quarter were particularly notable, rising by 63.1 percent to a total of 247,347 units.

The Toyota division experienced a slight decline in June sales with a total of 164,777 vehicles sold, down by 2.3 percent from June 2023. Despite this dip, the division's second-quarter performance was robust with a total of 532,809 vehicles sold, reflecting a 9.2 percent increase.

For the first half of the year, Toyota division's sales reached over one million vehicles (1,019,436), showing an increase of 14.7 percent on a volume basis and up by 13.2 percent on a daily selling rate (DSR) basis.

Lexus Division Achievements

Lexus recorded its best-ever first half in its history with sales totalling 167,211 vehicles in the first six months of the year. This represents an increase of 11.9 percent on a volume basis and up by 10.5 percent on a DSR basis.

June was also strong for Lexus with sales rising by 5.9 percent to reach 28,343 units compared to June last year. The second quarter saw Lexus selling 88,740 vehicles, marking a growth of 9.3 percent.

Key Highlights

Jack Hollis, executive vice president of Sales at TMNA stated: "The first half of 2024 surpassed our high expectations thanks to our teams’ continued focus on customers with even more great products, including electrified vehicles." He added that Lexus achieved its best-ever first half and Toyota remains the top retail brand in the industry.

TMNA's diverse portfolio includes 29 electrified vehicle options across Toyota and Lexus brands which contributed significantly to their overall sales volume through June.

Best-Ever Sales Records

Several models achieved their best-ever June and first-half sales records including bZ4X, GR86 Camry HEV and Corolla HEV among others for Toyota division; while Lexus saw record-breaking numbers for models like ES HEV and NX PHEV.

Overall passenger car sales for TMNA increased by 12 percent in the first half while truck (SUVs and trucks) sales rose by an impressive 15.7 percent during this period.

Toyota has been part of North America's cultural fabric for over six decades and is committed to advancing sustainable mobility through its brands and dealerships network across the region.

By mid-2025 Toyota plans to start manufacturing automotive batteries at its new plant in North Carolina further bolstering its commitment towards electrification with currently offering more electrified options than any other automaker globally.
