Toyota's Strategic Investment In WeaveGrid Aims To Enhance Battery Electric Vehicle Customer Experience

Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) is enhancing its home charging solutions as it gears up for the next wave of electrified vehicles. With backing from Woven Capital, TMNA is working with WeaveGrid to ensure seamless integration of Toyota's battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles with the electric grid. This collaboration aims to support a smooth energy transition that is efficient and equitable.

Christopher Yang, group vice president of Toyota EV Charging Solutions, stated, "Toyota is committed to making investments in technologies and solutions to provide greater insights for our customers and electric utility partners into how vehicles will interface with their homes and the electric grid." As more Toyota BEVs and PHEVs enter the market, the company aims to offer a high-quality ownership experience.

Toyota's strategy involves developing innovative solutions that enhance load flexibility benefits for electric vehicles on the grid. The company also seeks financial advantages for customers. By 2030, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory predicts a significant rise in BEV and PHEV numbers in the U.S., leading to increased electricity consumption.

To address this anticipated demand surge, Toyota is partnering with WeaveGrid and utilities to launch programs supporting a resilient and affordable grid. This collaboration explores how vehicle batteries can serve both propulsion and home energy needs, benefiting BEV and PHEV drivers as well as the grid.

WeaveGrid adopts a systems-oriented approach, believing that energy and transportation sectors must integrate further to accommodate vehicle electrification from automakers like Toyota. The goal is to help utilities manage this transition effectively.

Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

Yang emphasized Toyota's dedication to expanding its BEV and PHEV offerings while ensuring a seamless ownership experience akin to its reputation over 67 years in the U.S. "Investing in our infrastructure with WeaveGrid has the potential to provide customers and power utilities with mutual benefits that align with our mission to contribute to the goal of a carbon-neutral society," he added.

Toyota has been part of U.S. culture for over 65 years, advancing sustainable mobility through its brands, including Lexus, across nearly 1,500 dealerships. Employing around 48,000 people in the U.S., Toyota has produced over 34 million vehicles at its 11 manufacturing plants.

Future Plans

In 2025, Toyota's North Carolina plant will start producing automotive batteries for electrified vehicles. With more electrified options than any other automaker, Toyota currently offers 30 such models. Through its Driving Possibilities initiative, the Toyota USA Foundation supports educational programs in underserved communities near its U.S. sites.

Toyota remains committed to sustainable mobility solutions while fostering community development through education initiatives. The company's ongoing efforts aim at achieving carbon neutrality while enhancing customer experiences with electrified vehicles.
