Toyota Unveils The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept At The 2024 SEMA Show In Las Vegas

Toyota unveiled the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept at the 2024 SEMA Show, inspired by Southern California's surf culture. This concept vehicle combines the rugged spirit of the original 4Runner with modern technology from the 2025 model. It pays homage to an adventurous lifestyle that defined a generation, capturing the essence of 80s So-Cal beaches where surfers sought perfect waves.

The concept vehicle began as a 2025 4Runner TRD Limited, featuring an iForce 2.4L turbocharged engine with 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. It uses an eight-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled dual-range transfer case. A custom exhaust enhances its powertrain's sound.

Marty Schwerter, Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center Director, envisioned this concept after recalling his experiences on the Pacific Coast Highway in a Toyota mini pickup. "The 2025 4Runner reminded me of the original, with its rugged look and powerhouse 4cyl engine. I knew it had the potential to be the ultimate beach cruiser," said Schwerter. The team aimed to create a vehicle resonating today while honouring the past.

Transforming this vehicle into a "factory" model that performs well both with and without its top presented challenges. Schwerter explained, "Engineering a legitimate, removable top; going from a 4-door to a 2-door while maintaining functional windows; flipping the front passenger seat for improved rear seat access; and adding 2-inches of width to both sides were all just tip of the iceberg issues."

The removable top was meticulously crafted using traditional fabrication blended with CAD and modern 3D printing technology. This ensured cutlines mirrored both sides perfectly for a seamless fit. Designed for easy removal by one person, it offers open-air freedom synonymous with the 4Runner legacy.

The interior is weatherproofed for any adventure, featuring soft waterproof flooring and a front passenger seat that flips forward for easy rear access. Accessories include a custom surfboard "Travel Quiver" designed specifically for this concept, complementing its roof rack.

Suspension System and Performance

The long-travel suspension system includes billet aluminium front upper and lower A-arms for handling tough terrains smoothly. Steering upgrades, custom front axles, and Toyota Tundra rear-end housing enhance performance further. The concept’s muscular appearance is completed by 37-inch tires mounted on custom wheels.

This project highlights collaboration within Toyota, involving departments like TRD North Carolina, TMNA Production Engineering, Service Parts and Accessory Development (SPAD), AAP, and Motorsports and Engagement Marketing. Mike Tripp from Toyota Marketing stated, "This vehicle not only showcases Toyota’s engineering prowess; it also reflects the passion and creativity of our team members who are dedicated to pushing the boundaries."

Showcase at SEMA Show

The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept will be displayed at the Las Vegas Convention Center during November 5-8 in Toyota's booth (Central Hall, Booth 22200). Attendees can explore this innovative concept up close and see how Toyota honours its heritage while embracing future automotive adventures.

Toyota has been part of U.S. culture for over six decades, focusing on sustainable mobility through its brands like Lexus across nearly 1,500 dealerships. Employing over 49,000 people in America alone contributes significantly to designing vehicles domestically.

By 2025, their tenth plant in North Carolina will start producing automotive batteries for electrified vehicles as part of their commitment to sustainability initiatives such as Driving Possibilities Foundation supporting underserved communities near operational sites nationwide.
