Toyota's 2024 North American Environmental Sustainability Report Showcases Key Progress In Sustainability Initiatives

Toyota Motor North America has released its 2024 North American Environmental Sustainability Report. This annual document highlights the company's environmental initiatives in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Kevin Butt, Toyota's regional environmental sustainability director, stated, "Building on Toyota’s foundational principle of continuous improvement, Toyota aims to achieve our environmental sustainability goals – not just becoming carbon neutral – but also the continued collaboration, cooperation, and data management activities as they become standardized for all team members."

The report outlines Toyota's strategy and progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It details advancements in four priority areas: Carbon, Water, Circular Economy, and Biodiversity. The report includes an environmental metrics table and a Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) context index with disclosures aligned with GRI standards.

Toyota Releases 2024 Environmental Sustainability Report

In terms of carbon emissions, 77% of Toyota and Lexus models available in North America now offer an electrified option. Additionally, there has been a 14% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared to FY2019. The Dealer Environmental Excellence Program (D.E.E.P.) has seen participation from 74 dealers, reducing electricity use from non-renewable sources by 20%.

Water stewardship remains a focus for Toyota. There was a 6.8% decrease in water withdrawn per vehicle manufactured compared to FY2021. The company emphasises socially equitable and environmentally sustainable methods through site-based actions.

In the circular economy domain, previously referred to as "Materials," Toyota recycled or repurposed 93% of all waste in 2023. A further reduction of single-use packaging materials by 9% was achieved in FY2024, totalling a 22% reduction since FY2018.

Biodiversity Efforts

Toyota's biodiversity efforts include developing an additional 4,094.5 acres of pollinator habitat in FY2024 with partners like Pollinator Partnership (P2) and National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF). This brings the total to over 14,432 acres towards their goal of 26,000 acres.

Conservation programs at 16 sites have achieved Conservation Certification from the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), enhancing biodiversity on corporate landholdings. These initiatives are part of Toyota's broader commitment to nurturing biodiversity through partnerships.

Looking Forward

Toyota is committed to achieving its Environmental Challenge 2050 through collaboration and innovation. By investing strategically and forming partnerships across industries, the company aims to meet its aspirations in key focus areas.

The report begins with a letter highlighting the importance of united efforts against climate change. It stresses that collaboration with various partners is essential for developing sustainable solutions. By integrating diverse technologies and strategies, Toyota seeks to reduce its environmental impact while promoting mobility for all.

Toyota has been part of North America's cultural fabric for over 65 years. With more than 1,800 dealerships and nearly 64,000 employees in North America, it continues to advance sustainable mobility through its brands. In 2025, Toyota's North Carolina plant will start manufacturing automotive batteries for electrified vehicles.
