Topless Retro-styled Defender Helps F1 Driver Stand Out At The Beach

British Formula 1 driver Lando Norris has received a unique, retro-styled Land Rover Defender at his Monaco residence. Created by Retro Automotive, the vehicle retains the rugged appearance of the Defender 90 but includes numerous bespoke features tailored to Norris's specifications.

One of the most notable modifications is the complete removal of the roof, a first for Retro Automotive. Ben Davies, director at Retro Automotive, stated, "When we consulted with Lando about his customisation project, he was clear that he wanted the car to be completely topless, without any form of roof or sticks."

The Defender also features a distinctive McLaren-inspired colour scheme. The Nardo Grey is a special pearlescent mix created exclusively for Norris, while the Muirhead Egyptian Blue leather adds a Mediterranean touch. The vehicle also displays 3D-printed metal 'Lando Norris' iconography around the car, including on the hand-finished leather steering wheel.

Comfort and usability were key considerations in the design. The restoration build took over 1,000 hours and included adjustable air suspension for versatility. The rear bench seats have been extended to accommodate more passengers, and the car features a Pioneer head unit with Apple CarPlay.

The Defender is also equipped with a removable Marshall Kilburn II cubby speaker system, allowing passengers to enjoy music on the beach. Davies added, "Monaco is perhaps one of the most head-turning locations in Europe, so our creation for Lando will certainly be in good company."

Norris discovered Retro Automotive through Instagram after seeing another of their creations go viral. "Lando had been sitting around the dinner table with some fellow F1 drivers and they were all chatting about how they loved the car and what the brand stood for," explained Davies.

Retro Automotive produces only 15 vehicles per year due to high demand. The consultation to delivery process takes at least six months, with customers regularly updated through a personalised build portal app. Factory visits are encouraged before a final VIP handover at Swinton Estate in Yorkshire.

Having completed Norris's Defender project, Retro Automotive is now working on other retro projects for global customers. Established in 2018, Retro Automotive specialises in classic Land Rover restorations, focusing on quality and bespoke customisation.
