Top 10 Bestselling Carmakers In India (March 2024) - Maruti Suzuki Tops As Hyundai Retakes 2nd

March 2024 saw 369,381 vehicles reach dealerships in India. While Year-over-Year (Y-o-Y) numbers rose by 9.9 per cent (33,405 units) compared to March 2023, Month-over-Month (M-o-M) sales dipped by 0.75 per cent (2,797 units) compared to February 2024.

The final month of the financial year saw quite a few launches, mostly in the form of facelifts to existing models which was the main cause for the uplift in sales in the Year-over-Year numbers.

While Maruti continues its domination of the market, Hyundai and Tata's titanic struggle for the second spot on the sales charts saw the Korean marque emerge triumphant on the sales charts last month. Let's take a look at just how well the carmakers fared in March 2023.

1) Maruti Suzuki - 152,718 Units

Maruti Suzuki, the nation's largest carmaker continued its domination of the sales charts accounting for just over 41 per cent of the cars sold in India last month.

Y-o-Y numbers rose by 15.03 per cent (19,955 units) compared to the 132,763 units sold in March 2023. On the other hand, M-o-M numbers, dropped by 4.71 per cent (7,554 units), compared to the 160,272 units sold in February.

2) Hyundai - 53,001 Units

South Korean carmaker Hyundai reclaimed 2nd spot on the sales charts last month when it shipped out 53,001 units. Y-o-Y and M-o-M metrics were both in the black.

Y-o-Y sales for Hyundai rose by 4.75 per cent (2,401 units) compared to March 2023's 50,600 units. M-o-M metrics were also in the black, rising by 5.58 per cent (2,800 units) from February's 50,201 units.

3) Tata Motors - 50,105 units

Tata Motors continues its brisk start to the year, shipping 50,105 units to dealerships last month. Tata's Y-o-Y sales rose by 13.75 per cent (6,058 units) compared to the same month in 2023 when it sold 44,047 units.

However, M-o-M sales numbers, were in the red, dropping by 2.27 per cent (1,165 units) compared to the 51,270 units Tata sold in February 2024.

4) Mahindra - 40,631 Units

Indian SUV specialists Mahindra sold 40,631 vehicles last month. Y-o-Y sales were in the black for Mahindra, with the Mumbai-based marque seeing its numbers rise by 12.95 per cent (4,655 units) compared to the 35,976 units it sold in March 2023.

Mahindra's M-o-M metrics, though, were in the red. Mahindra's M-o-M numbers dipped by 4.17 per cent (1,770 units) when compared to February 2024, when the carmaker sold 42,401 units.

5) Toyota - 25,119 Units

Toyota had a stellar month of sales in March 2024, which saw it return to the list of the top 5 carmakers in the country. Toyota shipped out a total of 25,119 units in March 2024.

Toyota's Y-o-Y numbers rose by 34.54 per cent (6,449 units) compared to the 18,670 units it sold in March 2023. Toyota's M-o-M numbers were also in the black, rising by 7.81 per cent (1,819 units) compared to February's 23,300 units.

The Other 5 & Beyond

Korean carmaker Kia was 6th on the sales charts selling 21,400 units last month. While Y-o-Y sales compared to March 2023 dipped minutely by 0.47 per cent (101 units), M-o-M numbers were up by 1,200 units (5.94 per cent) over February 2024.

Honda was seventh on the list, with the Japanese carmaker selling 7,071 units last month. Y-o-Y sales compared to March 2023 were up by 5.66 per cent (379 units) but M-o-M numbers were down by 71 units (0.99 per cent) compared to the month before.

MG took the eighth spot on the sales charts selling 4,648 units last month. The Chinese-owned British marque, which recently announced a tie-up with JSW, saw its Y-o-Y numbers compared to March 2023 drop by 23.19 per cent (1,403 units) while its M-o-M numbers rose by 2.56 per cent (116 units) when compared to its February sales.

French carmaker Renault took the ninth spot on the list, selling 4,225 units last month. While Y-o-Y numbers compared to March 2023 were down by 21.6 per cent (1,165 units), M-o-M numbers were up by 145 units compared to February.

Volkswagen rounded off the Top 10 with the German marque selling 3,529 units last month. Y-o-Y metrics were down by 9.51 per cent (371 units) but M-o-M numbers rose by 16.89 per cent (510 units) when compared to February's numbers.

Skoda (2,802 units), Nissan (2,701 units), Citroen (1,006 units) and Jeep (425 units) rounded off the numbers for March's sales charts.

Thoughts About March Sales Numbers

While the story at the top of the table remained the same in March with Maruti standing head and shoulders above the competition, the intense battle for 2nd between Hyundai and Tata is something that should go on for quite a while yet and should lead to a lot of innovation.
