Tony Stewart And Matt Hagan Experience Early Exits At NHRA Midwest Nationals In St. Louis
Tony Stewart narrowly missed advancing in the NHRA Midwest Nationals on September 29, 2024. Competing in his TSR Dodge//SRT Top Fuel dragster, he faced Shawn Reed in the first round. Despite a strong performance, Stewart lost by just three inches due to a holeshot advantage by Reed. Heavy rain from Hurricane Helene had previously canceled Friday's qualifying sessions.
Stewart's teammate, Matt Hagan, also experienced an early exit in the Funny Car eliminations. Hagan, who had performed well in Charlotte with a top qualifying position and runner-up finish, was eliminated by Bob Tasca III in a close race. Despite this setback, Hagan remains among the top five in the NHRA Mission Funny Car standings.
The NHRA tour now heads to Texas for the NHRA Texas Fall Nationals from October 10-13. This event marks the 18th round of the 20-event campaign. Nitro action will commence with qualifying rounds on October 11 and continue through October 13 at the Texas Motorplex.
Ida Zetterström participated in her fifth NHRA professional Top Fuel event at the Midwest Nationals. She faced Steve Torrence in the first round but lost narrowly with a time of 3.764 against Torrence's 3.726. Zetterström expressed optimism about learning valuable lessons from recent races.
Mark Pawuk clinched victory in the Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown class at the NHRA Midwest Nationals. Driving his Empaco Equipment Dodge Challenger Mopar Drag Pak, Pawuk defeated Jonathan Allegrucci with a time of 7.792 seconds. This win secured Pawuk's championship title for the series.
Pawuk reflected on his racing career, stating, "This was my dream... I started racing in the '70s... To be able to win a championship in the NHRA is something I always dreamt of." He credited Don Schumacher and his father for their support throughout his journey.
