Tesla Cancels Budget EV Plans, Eyes Future In Self-Driving Robotaxis

American electric vehicle (EV) industry giant Tesla, has halted plans for a budget-friendly EV, shifting its focus towards the development of self-driving robotaxis claims a new report by Reuters.

This move marks a significant change in direction for the company, which has faced stiff competition from Chinese EV manufacturers offering vehicles at starting prices as low as $10,000. The decision to scrap what was informally known as the Model 2 not only impacts Tesla's growth strategy aimed at boosting sales and venturing into the mass market but also raises questions about its ambitious target of selling 20 million vehicles by 2030.

Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, had previously championed the vision of an affordable electric car for the masses. However, the company’s attention has now shifted towards robotics and automated transport solutions, an area fraught with both regulatory hurdles and engineering complexities. Despite these challenges, Musk remains optimistic about the future of robotaxis, indicating a strategic pivot in Tesla's roadmap. This redirection comes amidst various pressures, including scrutiny over Tesla's Autopilot system and criticism over Musk's public comments.

The announcement of the discontinued affordable EV project led to a temporary dip in Tesla's stock value states Reuters. Nevertheless, a recovery was seen following Musk's social media hints at an upcoming robotaxi unveil. Additionally, Tesla’s plans to bring the Cybertruck to market have encountered delays and cost increases, further deviating from the goal of producing a more economically accessible vehicle.

Initially forecasted to start at $40,000 (Rs 33.32 lakh), the lowest-priced Cybertruck model is now not expected until 2025, with a price tag of approximately $61,000 (Rs 50.82 lakh), attributed to challenges in manufacturing and battery technology.

The report also states that on the global stage, Chinese automaker BYD experienced a significant surge in EV sales, jumping from around 130,000 to over 1.5 million. BYD has successfully introduced a variety of electric models, including the Seagull hatchback, which is available for less than $10,000 (Rs 8.33 lakh) in China.

Plans are underway for BYD to export the Seagull at double its domestic price, still undercutting the projected price point for Tesla's envisioned affordable car. This development underscores the increasing competition in the EV market and highlights the shifting dynamics as companies strive to meet consumer demand for more cost-effective and sustainable transportation options.

Thoughts ABout Tesla Cancelling The Model 2

The cancellation of Tesla's entry-level electric car project reflects a broader industry trend towards prioritizing advanced technology and automation over traditional vehicle manufacturing and sales strategies. While the decision makes sense, the scrapping of the budget EV, could case Tesla issues as it enters a price senisitive market like India.
