Tata Motors is planning to unveil the automatic versions of its Tiago CNG hatchback in India, along with the Tigor CNG compact sedan and the rugged NRG hatchback. When launched, these exciting new cars will be the country's first CNG vehicles with automatic gearboxes.

Variants

Furthermore, the upcoming Tata Tiago CNG AT will be available in multiple variants. These include the XTA, the top-end XZA+, and the XZA NRG, mirroring the existing automatic transmission variants.

Pricing

If we take current pricing, a premium of Rs 80,000 is expected on the CNG AT variants over their manual counterparts. Though this premium may seem tall for some customers, the savings in running cost of CNG vehicles will offset this price disadvantage within a short span of time.

Powertrain

The Tata Tiago CNG automatic will retain the same robust 1.2-litre petrol engine. When running on petrol, the engine delivers around 84bhp and 113Nm of torque. However, in CNG mode, the output dips down to 72bhp and 95Nm.

However, what is very interesting is that the CNG variant of the Tiago will now come with an automatic gearbox. This automatic unit is expected to be the 5-speed AMT unit albeit with slightly different tuning to accommodate the CNG mode as well.

Highlights

The high-end XZA Plus variant will boast amenities such as smartphone integration, driver's seat height adjustment, powered mirrors and windows, push-button start, and rain-sensing wipers. Tata has also stirred excitement by introducing a new Tornado Blue color, initially exclusive to the CNG AMT variants.

Tata Motors has incorporated its twin-cylinder technology into the Tiago CNG AT, ingeniously splitting the CNG tank into two parts and positioning them lower in the chassis. This design choice ingeniously frees up additional boot space, enhancing the practicality of the vehicle.

Competition

At present, the Tiago CNG AT currently stands without a direct competitor anytime soon. However, its success could prompt rivals like Hyundai and Maruti to follow suit and venture into the CNG automatic space.
