Tata Punch EV Vs 2024 Hyundai Creta: Save More Than Rs 5 Lakh

Recently, Tata Motors and Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) shook up the Indian automobile market with the launches of the Tata Punch EV and the updated 2024 Hyundai Creta SUV, respectively.

Interestingly, the starting price of both these models is kept very attractive at Rs 10.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Riding on this price perspective, here's an interesting comparison between both these newly launched SUVs.

Also, in this comparison, we will look into the design, dimensions, powertrain, basic features, and running cost over a period of 5 years. The latter will allow buyers to carefully manage their finances.

Design

In terms of design, both the new Tata Punch EV and the 2024 Hyundai Creta are capable of turning heads. Also, both these SUVs look very modern and futuristic. However, it is the Hyundai Creta with its larger overall dimensions looks more premium among the two SUVs.

Dimensions

Speaking about dimensions, the Hyundai Creta facelift is a much bigger SUV than the Tata Punch EV. In fact, the Hyundai Creta sits two segments above the standard Tata Punch SUV.

Looking at numbers, the 2024 Hyundai Creta SUV measures 4,330mm long, 1,790mm wide, and 1,630mm tall. In comparison, the Punch EV measures just 3,857mm long, 1,742mm wide, and 1,633mm tall.

Tata Punch EV Vs 2024 Hyundai Creta Side

Even the wheelbase of the Tata Punch EV is substantially less than the new Hyundai Creta measuring just 2,445mm, which is 165mm less than the Hyundai Creta SUV (2,610mm). This difference in wheelbase will be very apparent in terms of legroom in the first and second rows.

Basic Features

Though we are comparing the base versions, both the Tata Punch EV and 2024 Hyundai Creta come well-equipped with features such as power windows, TPMS, height adjustable driver's seat, remote boot release, rear parking sensors, 6 airbags, ABS, ESC, and much more.

Tata Punch EV also offers a few extras such as LED headlamps, fully automatic climate control, and an air purifier. Creta also holds some advantages above the Punch EV with features such as rear AC vents, rear disc brakes, tilt and telescopic steering adjustments, and VSM.

Powertrain

The 2024 Hyundai Creta is available with multiple powertrain options, while Tata Motors offers two powertrain options in the new Punch EV. However, for Rs 10,99 lakh, both manufacturers offer one powertrain option.

Starting with the Tata Punch EV, the base spec model of the electric SUV sports an 80.46bhp electric motor with 114Nm of torque. This powertrain also comes paired with a 25kWh battery pack, enabling it to travel up to 315km before stopping for a charge.

On the other hand, the base variant of the 2024 Creta SUV packs in a 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol engine with 113.2bhp and 143.8Nm of torque. This engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as well.

Also, going as per the ARAI fuel efficiency figures, the newly launched 2024 Hyundai Creta facelift SUV returns a fuel efficiency of 17.4km/l. As such, with its 50-litre fuel tank the new Creta SUV can travel up to 870km before having to refuel.

Running Cost

Let us look at 5-year running cost of these SUVs given that both SUVs do an average of 2,000 kilometres a month. So, in 5 years, both these SUVs are expected to cover 1,20,000 kilometres.

Starting with the new Hyundai Creta, the SUV is expected to consume 6,897 litres of petrol in a span of 5 years. For the sake of calculation, let's assume the petrol price stays stable at Rs 105. This means the Creta user will have to spend Rs 7,24,185 on petrol alone.

On the other hand, it will take approximately 381 charging cycles for the Tata Punch EV to cover 1.20 lakh kilometres. However, as EV charging cost varies across states and charging points, let's assume it takes Rs 20/kWh on a public charging network.

With this assumption in place, it will cost Rs 500 to fully charge the Tata Punch EV. So, for 381 charging cycles (1,20,000km), the Tata Punch EV user has to shell out Rs 1,90,500.

Looking at the running cost of both SUVs, it is clear that the running cost of the Tata Punch EV is far less compared to the 2024 Hyundai Creta SUV. In fact, users can save up to Rs 5,33,685 by opting for an EV.

That being said, it is not only a numbers game, if the battery in the Punch EV depletes over the years and battery warranty is void, then the user will have the spend a large amount of money on battery replacement alone (usually, this amount is around Rs 5-6 lakh).
