Tata Punch Conquers the SUV Arena with 3 Lakh Units Rolled Out
In the competitive Indian SUV market, the Tata Punch has made a significant impact, crossing the production milestone of 3 lakh units in just over two years since its introduction. This achievement underscores the vehicle's strong demand and Tata Motors' momentum in the domestic automobile sector. Launched in October 2021, the Punch has quickly become a favorite among Indian consumers, consistently ranking among the top 10 cars sold each month.
Impressive Sales and Production Numbers
These impressive figures are a testament to the Punch's popularity, with Tata Motors selling one lakh units in the nine months leading up to this landmark. The Punch, recognized as Tata Motors’ smallest SUV offering, competes with models like the Hyundai Exter.

It is available with both internal combustion engine (ICE) and compressed natural gas (CNG) options, enhancing its appeal to a broader consumer base. With the anticipation building around the launch of an all-electric Punch variant later in the year, Tata Motors continues to innovate within its vehicle lineup.
Performance and Specifications
The Punch SUV is powered by a 1.2-liter, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that is paired with either a five-speed manual or an automated manual transmission (AMT). This engine delivers a power output of approximately 85 bhp and peak torque of 113 Nm.
For eco-conscious drivers, the Punch's iCNG technology offers a dual-cylinder setup, making it a versatile option in terms of fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness.
Variants and Pricing
Tata Motors caters to a diverse customer base by offering the Punch in four main trims, which are further divided into eight variants. The entry-level Pure and Pure (O) variants are available exclusively with manual transmission, while higher trims like Adventure, Adventure (O), Accomplished, Accomplished (O), Creative, and Creative (O) provide both transmission options. Pricing for the Punch SUV starts at ₹6 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base model and climbs to ₹9.50 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-end Creative (O) variant.
Feature-Rich SUV
The Punch SUV is replete with features aimed at enhancing the driving experience. These include a push-button start, automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, auto-folding outside rear-view mirrors (ORVMs), a cooled glovebox, and a rear-seat armrest. Entertainment and connectivity are also prioritized with a seven-inch infotainment screen, ensuring that the Punch remains a compelling choice for tech-savvy consumers.
In August of the previous year, Tata Motors announced its ambitious plan to launch four electric vehicles by early 2024. The lineup includes the much-anticipated Punch EV, which has been spotted undergoing tests on several occasions. It is speculated that the Punch EV will incorporate Tata's proven Ziptron technology, which is also used in the Nexon EV.
The battery size is expected to be similar to that of the Tigor EV or Nexon EV, and the long-range variant of the Punch EV could offer a range exceeding 300 kilometers on a single charge.
DriveSpark Thinks
As Tata Motors prepares to expand its electric vehicle offerings, the automotive world eagerly watches for the Punch EV's debut. The success of the Punch SUV in the conventional market sets a promising stage for its electric counterpart, which could play a significant role in accelerating India's shift to sustainable mobility.
With its impressive sales, diverse range of options, and upcoming electric version, the Punch continues to punch above its weight in the subcompact SUV segment.
