Tata Motors Set To Expand CNG Lineup With Nexon: All Details Here

Tata Motors is set to launch the Nexon CNG in the current financial year, expanding its CNG portfolio. The company had previously showcased the Nexon iCNG concept at the Bharat Mobility show, and upon release, it will primarily compete with Maruti Brezza CNG. Tata Motors has achieved several milestones with its C vehicles, such as introducing the AMT option for CNG variants of Tiago and Tigor and pioneering the dual-CNG tank setup that conserves boot space.

Nexon CNG: Features and Expectations

The Nexon CNG will be unique in offering a turbo petrol engine with a CNG option, making it the first SUV in India to have such a configuration. The 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, turbo petrol engine on ICE Nexon produces 120 PS and 170 Nm when running on petrol; however, these figures will be lower when using CNG. The Nexon CNG is anticipated to be available with both manual and AMT gearbox options.

The exterior design of the Nexon CNG will closely resemble that of the ICE Nexon, with most equipment remaining unchanged. However, iCNG badges will be added to indicate fuel options, and some mechanical adjustments may be required, such as suspension system tweaks to accommodate the additional weight of the CNG tanks and fuel.

Tata iCNG Platform: Advantages

The Tata iCNG platform offers numerous benefits, including a single advanced ECU that enables smooth transitions between CNG and petrol modes while ensuring optimal fuel efficiency. Users can start their vehicle directly in CNG mode – a first-in-segment feature – saving time and fuel. The iCNG system also allows for automatic switching to petrol when CNG levels are low and quick, safe refuelling with a special nozzle.

Safety features are also integrated into the Tata iCNG platform. For instance, a micro switch turns off the engine as soon as the fuel lid is opened. The iCNG kit has been rigorously tested under various temperatures and pressures, designed to automatically cut off the CNG supply to the engine during thermal incidents or switch to petrol mode if a leak is detected.

Upcoming Tata Models

In addition to the Nexon CNG, Tata plans to launch other new models this financial year, including the Curvv compact SUV which will be available in both ICE and electric formats.
