First Tata Nexon Rolls Off the Line at Newly Acquired Sanand Plant!

In an exciting leap forward for the Indian automotive sector, Tata Motors, through its subsidiary Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. (TPEM), has fired up the engines of production at its newest manufacturing site in Sanand, Gujarat. The facility, which was once under the banner of Ford India, is now home to the first Tata-branded vehicle to emerge from its production lines – the popular Nexon SUV.

Rapid Transformation: Retooling the Sanand Facility in Record Time

The takeover of the Sanand plant, which was finalized in January 2023 for a sum in the vicinity of Rs 750 crores, represents a strategic play by Tata Motors to amp up its manufacturing prowess. This move was driven by the ever-increasing appetite for electric vehicles (EVs) within the nation.

Spanning a vast 460 acres, the Sanand factory is Tata Motors' second establishment in Gujarat that is equipped to produce both Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and EV models.

Shailesh Chandra, the Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, took pride in the inaugural rollout at the new facility. He attributed this rapid achievement to the swift retooling of the factory, achieved in a mere 12 months.

Chandra thanked the Government of Gujarat for their support and commended the workforce for their instrumental role in reaching this significant milestone.

Chandra pointed to the crucial role of the new facility in the company's expansion plans, saying, "With existing capacities near saturation, this new facility will unlock an additional state-of-the-art manufacturing capacity of 300,000 units per annum, scalable to 420,000 units per annum." He also underlined Tata Motors' resolve to maintain its growth trajectory by investing in the EV market and continuing its range of "New Forever" products.

Growth Trajectory: Tata Motors' Vision for the Sanand Facility

Located in the industrial stronghold of GIDC Sanand, the facility enjoys the advantage of an established supply chain network. With advanced technology and high levels of automation in its four primary shops – Stamping, Body Construction, Paint, and Final Assembly – the plant sets a new industry standard.

The extensive retooling and technological enhancements include a revamped press shop with new dies for stamping, an upgraded weld shop with additional robots, and a paint shop with improved robotic painting systems. The assembly shop has also seen upgrades to its handling and end-of-line systems.

Currently housing over 1000 employees, Tata Motors has plans to inject another 1000 jobs into the plant over the next few months, in line with an anticipated increase in production. The company is investing in the professional development of its employees through educational programs ranging from diplomas to master's degrees.

Moreover, the plant demonstrates Tata Motors' dedication to eco-friendliness, boasting a 50 KW solar rooftop and targeting water positivity by December 2024.

The initiation of operations at the Sanand plant cements Tata Motors' status as a leading force in India's automotive industry, especially within the EV sphere.
