M.K. Stalin To Launch Tata Motors And JLR's New Plant In Ranipet

Chief Minister M K Stalin is set to inaugurate the foundation for the JLR and Tata Motors manufacturing plant in Panapakkam, Ranipet district next month. This facility will be the first in India to produce JLR's luxury models locally. Until now, these models were either imported fully built from Britain or assembled in Pune.

Focus on Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

JLR, owned by Tata Motors, will exclusively produce electric vehicles at this new site. Tata Motors will also manufacture a broader range of vehicles, including potential hybrid models.

Officials highlighted that rising fuel prices, stricter emission norms, and government incentives are boosting the hybrid car market. The demand for hybrid cars is growing not only in the Asia Pacific region but also in Europe and North America.

The Rs 9,000 crore facility spans nearly 500 acres within the Sipcot industrial area. It aims to cater to both domestic and international markets with its luxury vehicle production. An official mentioned that this plant would create around 5,000 jobs over five years in automotive and related sectors around Ranipet district.

Significant Sales Growth for JLR

Earlier this month, JLR reported a 31% year-on-year increase in retail sales for the first quarter ending June 30, 2024. Sales of the Defender and Range Rover Evoque models surged by over 50%, according to JLR India. This growth underscores the strong market demand for these luxury vehicles.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed with the Tamil Nadu government in March this year to establish this manufacturing facility. "In September, we will sign a non-binding agreement covering incentives and other legalities," an official stated.

Tata Motors' new plant will not only focus on electric vehicles but also consider producing hybrids. The company aims to address various factors driving hybrid car growth globally. These include increasing fuel costs, stringent emission regulations, and eco-friendly vehicle incentives from governments.

The establishment of this facility marks a significant milestone for Tata Motors and JLR in India. It reflects their commitment to expanding local manufacturing capabilities while meeting global market demands for luxury and eco-friendly vehicles.

This development is expected to boost employment opportunities significantly in Ranipet district, benefiting both direct and indirect job sectors within automotive industries.
