A Car That Ratan Tata Kept For Himself: All Details Here

In the ever-evolving Indian automotive landscape, Tata Motors has been a significant player, consistently introducing a range of cars since its inception. The journey began with the Indica hatchback and has now reached the Tata Curvv.

Over the years, Tata Motors has experienced both highs and lows. An interesting snippet from this journey is that Mr Ratan Tata, the former Chairperson of Tata Group, possesses a unique car that Tata Motors never officially released.

In 2009, Tata Motors made headlines with the launch of the Nano, which was tagged as India's most affordable car. This venture was a pet project of Ratan Tata, aimed at making car ownership accessible to a wider audience at an unprecedented price point. Despite the high hopes pinned on it by the company's chairperson, the Nano did not achieve the anticipated success in the market.

During the same period, Tata Motors partnered with Jayem, a Coimbatore-based engineering and production house, to create JTP. This collaboration focused on enhancing the performance of the Tiago and Tigor models. It also sparked hopes for future performance-oriented offerings from Tata Motors.

Concurrently, an ambitious project to develop an electric version of the Nano was initiated by Tata Motors and Jayem, with Ratan Tata personally overseeing its progress. However, the partnership dissolved, leading to the discontinuation of the Nano electric project.

But the story didn't end there. In 2022, Ratan Tata received his very own Nano electric, custom-made by Electra EV. This Coimbatore-based powertrain manufacturer utilized the pre-facelift Tigor EV's 72V architecture for the battery pack, crafting a car that never saw an official launch by Tata Motors. This particular model underscored the potential within Tata Motors for innovative, eco-friendly vehicle design, even if it didn't reach the mass market.

Despite the project's halt, the general public almost had the opportunity to experience a version of the Nano electric. In 2018, Ola Cabs placed an order for 400 units of a custom-built Nano EV with Jayem Motors. Jayem procured a bulk of Nano cars and modified them to create the Jayem Neo.

Initially intended for cab service, these cars were later offered to the public by Ola, allowing buyers a unique opportunity to own an electric vehicle with a distinct lineage. This move highlighted the Nano EV's appeal, with buyers eager to acquire a model even at a premium for a white registration plate.

It's evident that through its journey, Tata Motors has explored various avenues to innovate and cater to the diverse needs of Indian consumers. From the commercial failure of the Nano to the niche appeal of the Nano electric, these endeavors reflect the company's commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive technology and accessibility.

The story of Ratan Tata's unique electric Nano serves as a testament to the spirit of innovation that defines Tata Motors, even in projects that never reached the broader market.
