Tamil Nadu Transitions Buses To CNG And LNG For Eco-Friendliness
The Tamil Nadu government has opted to use CNG (compressed natural gas) and LNG (liquefied natural gas) for buses instead of diesel to promote environmental sustainability.
This initiative has led to the operation of six CNG buses across Madurai, Salem, and Kumbakonam Transport Corporations, with two buses each in these regions.

Cost Efficiency and Mileage Improvement
These CNG buses have been operational for over 50 days, resulting in a significant reduction in diesel expenditure. In particular, the Madurai Transport Corporation noted that while 519 litres of diesel were previously required to cover 2,697 km, only 437 litres of CNG are now needed for the same distance. This change has improved mileage from 5.2 km per litre of diesel to 6.17 km per litre of CNG.
Officials highlighted that this shift has saved Rs.47,361 on diesel and Rs.34,755 on CNG expenses. Consequently, there is a saving of Rs.4.67 per km, reducing operating costs by 13 per cent overall.
Trial Runs and Safety Measures
Efforts are underway to introduce CNG buses on a trial basis in Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, and Villupuram Transport Corporations. Additionally, measures are being taken to prevent incidents like the recent CNG bus fire in the Municipal Transport Corporation.
Officials also mentioned that converting diesel buses to run on CNG proved cost-effective within a month. They noted that CNG buses perform better during daytime operations compared to nighttime.

The Tamil Nadu government's decision aligns with its goal of reducing environmental impact while improving cost efficiency in public transportation. This move also sets a positive example for other regions to follow suit and embrace sustainable transportation solutions.
"We are taking steps to prevent incidents like the recent CNG bus fire in the Municipal Transport Corporation," officials stated. The corporation is investing in rigorous maintenance schedules and regular safety inspections for all CNG buses.
The transition from diesel to natural gas not only supports environmental goals but also offers financial benefits through reduced fuel costs and improved mileage.
This initiative reflects a broader effort by the Tamil Nadu government to enhance public transportation while addressing environmental concerns.
By investing in cleaner fuel options like natural gas, the government is taking a proactive step towards a more sustainable future.
This shift not only improves air quality and reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also demonstrates a commitment to responsible resource management.
Furthermore, the decision to transition to natural gas aligns with global trends towards cleaner energy sources, positioning Tamil Nadu as a leader in sustainable transportation practices.
