Tamil Nadu Government Redistributes 229 Ageing Buses To Improve Transport Efficiency
The Tamil Nadu government has decided to redistribute 229 buses from the Express Transport Corporation to other transport corporations. This decision involves transferring buses that are 8 to 9 years old. An official order has been issued to facilitate this transfer. The aim is to ensure these older buses are utilised effectively across various regions.
The state government has initiated the purchase of 7,682 new buses, which are being introduced gradually. In June, a review meeting led by the Chief Secretary focused on the Transport Corporations.
During this meeting, it was decided that older buses from the Express Transport Corporation would be transferred based on the needs of other corporations. All transport corporations in Tamil Nadu, except Salem, have expressed interest in acquiring these buses.
According to the plan, 63 buses will be allocated to Villupuram, 35 to Coimbatore, 66 to Kumbakonam, 45 to Madurai, and 20 to Nellai. These transfers will occur once the new buses are operational. In Tamil Nadu, it's common practice to move buses between corporations after they reach a certain age. This transfer order aligns with that tradition.
The Transport Minister has mandated that these buses be transferred at their current market value. Buses typically have a defined lifespan, but in Tamil Nadu, they often operate beyond this period. This has led to many outdated buses still being in service.
There is growing dissatisfaction among the public regarding the continued use of these ageing buses. The transfer of old buses between corporations often results in their eventual sale. Operating these vehicles beyond their intended lifespan poses significant safety risks and increases the likelihood of breakdowns.
Instead of merely transferring outdated buses, there is a call for them to be recycled properly and replaced with newer models. This approach would enhance public safety and improve service quality.
