After the engine has cooled down, check the coolant level. Always check the coolant level from the coolant reservoir tank and do not try opening the radiator cap while the car is still hot. If the coolant level is low, you can top up the coolant level in the reservoir tank.

If the coolant is not available, you can temporarily use water as well. But be careful not to add cold water as cold water doesn't go well with the hot engine and can cause the engine block to crack.

Even if the mechanic or the service station is in close proximity, do not attempt to drive your car over there if it is still overheating.
