Subaru Motorsports USA Debuts High-Performance 2024 WRX: Project Midnight
Subaru Motorsports USA has unveiled "Project Midnight," their fastest WRX to date. This new model, piloted by ex-F1 driver and rallycross champion Scott Speed, boasts a 670 horsepower turbocharged BOXER engine and all-wheel drive. The lightweight tarmac special weighs just 2,469 lbs and will debut at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed from July 11-14.
Project Midnight is a significant evolution from its predecessor, the "Airslayer" Gymkhana car. While Airslayer was versatile, Project Midnight focuses solely on tarmac speed. It features ultra-wide aerodynamic bodywork and a larger wing than the team’s WRX ARA24 gravel rally car. The carbon fiber body and lightened chassis reduce its weight to under 2,500 pounds, making it nearly 300 pounds lighter than Airslayer and 1,000 pounds lighter than a standard WRX.
The car's suspension geometry is specially designed for tarmac. It replaces Airslayer’s 17-inch rallycross wheels with 18x11-inch OZ Racing Superturismo LMP magnesium wheels and 280/650R18 Yokohama ADVAN slicks. Under the hood, a turbocharged and intercooled 2.0-liter flat-four engine produces an impressive 670 hp and 680 lb-ft of torque, revving up to 9,500 rpm.
The legacy of Project Midnight stems from Subaru's rallycross success. The engine is the latest evolution of Subaru Motorsports USA’s rallycross powerplant that helped Scott Speed win the Nitro Rallycross Teams Championship in 2021. Speed commented on the car's unique feel: "Subaru Motorsports USA and the team at Vermont SportsCar have delivered an absolute beast. When driving the car it clearly has rallycross roots, but the wider tires, track, and geometry give it a very unique feel and incredible grip. The ultimate driving machine; half RX, half sports car – a true joy to drive."
