End Of An Era: Subaru Legacy Production To Conclude In 2025
Subaru of America, Inc. has officially announced that the production of the Legacy sedan will cease in the spring of 2025, marking the end of an era for the 2025 model year. This decision comes as the automotive industry witnesses a significant shift towards SUVs, crossovers, and electrified vehicles. The starting price for the final 2025 Legacy model will be $24,895, maintaining the price point of its predecessor, the 2024 model year.
Since its introduction to the American market in 1989, the Subaru Legacy has been a staple of the brand's lineup, celebrated for its safety, reliability, and innovative features. Manufactured at Subaru's Indiana plant, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, it was the first Subaru model produced in the United States. The Legacy's enduring appeal is evidenced by the fact that over 94% of Legacy vehicles sold in the last decade are still operational today. Additionally, it has consistently been recognized as an Insurance Institute of Highway Safety Top Safety Pick for 18 consecutive years.

The Legacy's journey began with a design that set new standards in the mid-sized sedan and wagon segment, featuring advanced technology like multi-point fuel injection and fully independent suspension. It also laid the groundwork for the iconic Subaru Outback with its Legacy Wagon variant. Over its lifespan, six generations of the Legacy have achieved over 1.3 million sales in the U.S., making it Subaru's longest-running model line.
However, changing market dynamics and Subaru's commitment to electrification have led to this strategic decision to discontinue the Legacy. Subaru Corporation plans to introduce eight electric vehicle (EV) models by 2028, including the Solterra EV which debuted in the 2023 model year. This move aligns with Subaru's broader transition towards a more sustainable automotive future.
The 2025 Legacy aims to leave a lasting legacy as it enters Subaru retailers this spring. It continues to offer the award-winning EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology standard across all models, ensuring that Subaru's commitment to safety and innovation remains steadfast until the very end.
