Limited Edition Of ‘The Cars You Always Promised Yourself’ Book Launched
Steve Saxty has released a new, limited edition of his book "The Cars You Always Promised Yourself," now available in a larger format. This edition, signed by the author and limited to 500 copies, explores Ford of Europe’s design, engineering, and marketing evolution through iconic cars from the '70s, '80s, and '90s. The book is priced at £89.95 and includes an additional RS Icons publication.
The 336-page book features a soft feel cover and custom-commissioned double-page renders of notable cars like Henry Ford’s unique RS2000. It provides fascinating insights from the original designers. Saxty's work delves into the development of Ford’s most desirable coupes, including the Capri, Puma, XR, and RS Sierra.
Saxty's latest edition is intended for enthusiasts who missed out on the initial print run in 2019. The first edition sold out quickly, leading to hundreds of back orders. This new release aims to satisfy that demand with enhanced content and a larger format to match Saxty's recent BMW books.
To create this comprehensive account of Ford’s coupes from the 1970s to early 2000s, Saxty had full access to Ford’s archives. He spent countless hours interviewing designers, engineers, and managers who were instrumental in bringing these cars to life. His book includes anecdotes and images tracing the cars' evolution from sketches to clay models and showroom stars.
"We had hundreds of requests to reproduce the original," says Steve Saxty. "Although we could have simply reprinted it, we wanted to do more. I envisioned a ‘restomod’ version—longer with extra content, larger to match the size of my recently launched BMW books and minor improvements to highlight what was inside."
Unseen Concepts and Prototypes
In addition to showcasing popular models, Saxty's book offers a glimpse into Fords that never made it to production. It features images of concepts and prototypes along with stories explaining why they never reached the market. This aspect adds an intriguing layer for car enthusiasts interested in what could have been.
Since publishing his first book in 2019, Saxty has become a respected writer on car design. Both Ford and BMW granted him unparalleled access to their archives and designers. His latest work on BMW has received critical acclaim from media outlets and fans alike.
A Career Rooted in Automotive Design
Steve Saxty grew up near Ford’s R&D centre in the UK and was inspired by prototypes he saw daily. Hired by Ford in the 1980s as a design engineer, he soon transitioned into marketing roles at Mazda and Porsche before consulting for brands like BMW and Rolls-Royce.
Now based in New York, Saxty continues to write about car design. His previous works include "The Cars You Always Promised Yourself," a book on the Capri, "Secret Fords," and the critically acclaimed "BMW Behind The Scenes" set released in 2023.
The new edition of "The Cars You Always Promised Yourself" is available just in time for Christmas with free UK P&P. Each copy includes Saxty’s RS Icons book and retails for £89.95 via www.stevesaxty.com.
"As the definitive story of the design of the Capri, Sierra and RS Cosworth," says Steve Saxty, "we wanted the new cover to convey what was inside."
