Stellantis Commits $406 Million To Michigan For Electric Vehicle Production
Stellantis has announced a significant investment of over $406 million in three Michigan facilities to support its multi-energy strategy. The Sterling Heights Assembly Plant (SHAP) will be the first U.S. plant to build a fully electric vehicle, starting with the Ram 1500 REV, launching in late 2024. This facility will also produce the range-extended 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger alongside internal combustion engine (ICE) models.
SHAP will receive $235.5 million to produce the battery-electric 2025 Ram 1500 REV light-duty truck, which was unveiled at the 2023 New York Auto Show. The plant will also manufacture the all-new range-extended 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger. The teams at SHAP completed BEV-specific installations during two planned down weeks, showcasing their ingenuity by finishing ahead of schedule.
The new STLA Frame architecture, designed for full-size electric vehicles, underpins the Ram 1500 REV. This frame is made from high-strength steel and advanced materials to ensure it is lightweight yet durable. The vehicle offers up to 500 miles of range with an optional 229 kilowatt-hour battery pack and up to 350 miles with a 168 kilowatt-hour battery pack.
Approximately $97.6 million will be invested in the Warren Truck Assembly Plant (WTAP) for producing a future electrified Jeep Wagoneer. This model is one of four Jeep EVs set to launch globally by the end of 2025. Electrified versions will be built on the same line as ICE models of the Jeep Wagoneer and Wagoneer L, as well as the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer L.
Dundee Engine Plant Enhancements
The Dundee Engine Plant (DEP) will see an investment of over $73 million for retooling to assemble, weld, and test battery trays for the STLA Frame architecture and machine beams for the STLA Large architecture. Production is set to begin in 2024 and 2026, respectively. These components will be produced alongside new engines launching later this year and in 2025.
The Ram 1500 Ramcharger boasts impressive specifications with its 92 kilowatt-hour battery pack paired with a 130 kW generator, delivering power to front and rear electric drive modules (EDMs). It offers vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-home bi-directional charging capabilities, allowing it to charge another Stellantis electric vehicle or provide power back to the grid.
Dare Forward 2030 Strategic Plan
Stellantis' investments align with its Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan aimed at leading global mobility through innovative, clean, safe, and affordable solutions. The company plans to invest over €50 billion in electrification this decade to achieve a target of 100% passenger car BEV sales mix in Europe and a 50% mix in the U.S. by 2030.
To meet these goals, Stellantis is securing around 400 GWh of battery capacity with support from manufacturing plants in North America and Europe. The company aims to become carbon net zero by 2038 across all scopes with minimal compensation for remaining emissions.
"Sterling Heights Assembly has performed an incredible transformation in record time," said Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. "Gearing up to build our first-ever Ram electric truck and the range-extended version in Michigan is a meaningful moment of pride for our teams."
Stellantis N.V., known for its iconic brands like Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Jeep®, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram, Vauxhall, Free2move and Leasys aims to provide clean mobility solutions worldwide while adding value for stakeholders through its Dare Forward 2030 plan.
