BMW Launches Production Of The New 2 Series Gran Coupé At Leipzig Plant With Enhanced Features
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, a compact four-door model, is now entering its second generation. This vehicle is exclusively produced at the BMW Group Plant Leipzig, which also manufactures the BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, and MINI Countryman. The plant's production capacity reaches up to 1,300 vehicles daily, showcasing its flexibility by producing different models on a single line.
The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé will be available in March 2025. It was first introduced five years ago as a luxurious alternative to traditional sedans. Production of the initial model began in Leipzig on November 1, 2019, with its market debut in March 2020. The main markets for this model have been the UK, China, and the US.
The latest version of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé boasts an eye-catching design with new engine options and advanced suspension technology. It also includes a system for partially automated driving and parking as standard. The car has grown by 25 millimetres in height and 20 millimetres in length, enhancing its sporty elegance.
The exterior features a low front section angled towards the road and a dynamic silhouette. A powerful rear design adds to its sporty look. The tailgate is assembled using a new machine with laser-beam welding technology at Plant Leipzig's body shop.
BMW Group Plant Leipzig has undergone significant expansion since 2018 to increase production capacity. It can now produce up to 350,000 cars annually—100,000 more than before. Since November 2023, production volumes have risen due to the MINI Countryman addition.
This plant is unique within the BMW Group for manufacturing cars from two brands on one line. It can produce up to 500 MINI and approximately 800 BMW vehicles daily. This increase supports job security and creates around 900 new jobs in vehicle production by 2024.
Interior Upgrades
The interior of the four-door BMW 2 Series Coupé is redesigned without leather and includes a Curved Display like other models from Leipzig. Reengineered seats provide better comfort for long journeys. The top variant, the BMW M235 xDrive Gran Coupé, features a powerful engine with specific fuel consumption and CO2 emissions details provided below:

At its market launch in March 2025, the engine lineup will include another petrol engine plus two diesel options. The compact four-door model offers two unicolour finishes along with seven metallic and four BMW Individual paint options. An optional high-gloss black contrast roof is also available.
The new BMW models feature an innovative kidney grille design with vertical and diagonal bars like those seen on the recently launched BMW 1 Series since July. From March 2025 onwards, customers can opt for an illuminated surround for this grille.
Plant Operations
Since opening in 2005, Plant Leipzig introduced nightshifts in assembly for the first time this September. Now it operates round-the-clock in three shifts to manufacture both BMW and MINI vehicles efficiently.
"The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé joins our lineup alongside other popular models," says Plant Director Petra Peterhansel. "Our products are well-received by customers." This diverse range ensures good capacity utilisation at Plant Leipzig.
