Skoda Set To Enrich Indian Market With Launch Of New Compact SUV

Skoda is set to introduce a new compact SUV in the Indian market, aimed at broadening its appeal and reaching a more extensive customer base. This upcoming SUV, which is yet to be named (choices are between Kwiq, Kymaq, Kylaq, Kariq, and Kyroq), will be built on the MQB A0-IN platform, a shared foundation between Skoda and Volkswagen in India. In anticipation of its launch, Skoda has teased the vehicle and initiated a poll for its naming, with options including Kwiq, Kymaq, Kylaq, Kariq, and Kyroq.

The compact SUV will feature a length under four metres, a strategic decision that enables it to benefit from excise duty reductions, thus making it more competitively priced. Its design is expected to depart from the Kushaq model, with a shorter nose and boot, alongside new headlights and a grille designed to give it a more pronounced appearance.

The vehicle aims to meet Indian customers' expectations in terms of price, size, content, and features. Notably, it will sport a smaller wheelbase and modified door skins as measures to cut costs.

Under the hood, the new Skoda SUV will be powered by a 1.0 TSI engine capable of delivering 115hp and 178Nm of torque. In terms of transmission, it will offer both a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. To enhance fuel efficiency, the SUV will be equipped with smaller wheels.

The design philosophy for this vehicle will follow Skoda's 'Modern Solid' language, ensuring it is not only visually appealing but also representative of the brand's latest design trends.

With plans to export the compact SUV to markets in South America, South-East Asia, and Africa, Skoda aims to achieve significant sales volumes. The company has set an ambitious target of selling 100,000 units and capturing a 5% market share in India by the end of the decade.

A crucial factor in realizing these goals is the vehicle's pricing. Skoda's CEO, Klaus Zellmer, has underscored the importance of competitive pricing in the Indian market. The SUV is expected to be priced between Rs 9-14 lakh, positioning it as an attractive option for a broad spectrum of buyers.

Skoda's initiative to launch a new compact SUV in India reflects its commitment to expanding its footprint in the market by catering to the preferences and requirements of Indian consumers.

By leveraging the shared MQB A0-IN platform and focusing on competitive pricing, Skoda aims to make a significant impact on the compact SUV segment, which is increasingly popular among Indian car buyers.
