Skoda Kylaq: Crowd-Named Compact SUV Set For 2025 India Launch
Škoda Auto India has reached a significant milestone with the introduction of its new compact SUV, named Kylaq. This name was chosen through a nationwide campaign that engaged thousands of participants. The Kylaq reflects a unique bond with future drivers and marks Škoda's entry into the compact SUV segment in India.
The "Name Your Škoda" campaign, launched in February 2024, invited users, customers, and fans to suggest names for the new SUV. The criteria required names to start with 'K' and end with 'Q', following Škoda's naming tradition for their ICE SUVs. The campaign received over 200,000 entries, including more than 24,000 unique names.

Named by the People
Participants then voted on 15 shortlisted names. Based on these votes, Škoda Auto India announced 10 final names. The winning name, Kylaq, met all legal compliance criteria and received the most votes. Derived from the Sanskrit word for crystal, Kylaq symbolises purity and draws inspiration from Mt. Kailash.
Petr Janeba, Brand Director of Škoda Auto India, stated: "Our new compact SUV Kylaq is for the people of India. We wanted them to be part of every milestone of our biggest-ever launch in the country. The 'Name Your Škoda' campaign aimed at inculcating a sense of pride and belonging among participants and potential customers. The results are humbling with over 200,000 entries."
The Skoda Kylaq
The Skoda Kylaq will debut in India and globally in 2025. It is based on the MQB-AO-IN platform, similar to the Kushaq SUV and Slavia sedan. This platform was developed specifically for India by teams from both India and the Czech Republic. It focuses on versatility, safety, dynamics, localisation, low maintenance costs, and a hassle-free ownership experience.
The new compact SUV will feature Škoda's Modern Solid design language for the first time in India. It will have high ground clearance and ample wheel space to handle uneven roads effectively. The design will include typical Škoda elements like refined DRL light signatures and a hexagon pattern on the side and rear.
What to Expect
Currently undergoing rigorous testing across India, the Kylaq is being prepared for production with local supplier ramp-ups. Despite its compact footprint, it promises a 'big car' feel due to its larger car platform.
Škoda has a tradition of meaningful nomenclature dating back to its first full-fledged 7-seater luxury 4x4, the Kodiaq in 2017. This tradition continues with names like Kushaq—derived from Sanskrit meaning Emperor—and now Kylaq.
The winner of the naming contest will be the first owner of a Škoda Kylaq when it launches in 2025. Additionally, ten other winners will get an opportunity to visit Škoda Auto in Prague and tour both the Škoda Museum and city.
The India Fleet
Škoda's journey in India saw significant milestones with the launch of Kushaq in July 2021 and Slavia sedan in March 2022. These models helped achieve record sales figures quickly surpassing 100,000 units sold. The Kylaq will be their third all-new product tailored specifically for Indian consumers.
This new chapter for Škoda Auto India signifies not just an expansion into a growing segment but also highlights their commitment to engaging with their customer base meaningfully through initiatives like "Name Your Škoda".
