Owners Beware: Modified Fortuners Targeted In Delhi Diesel Ban
In Delhi, a rule bans all diesel cars older than ten years. Recently, many vehicles have been seized under this regulation. A video has surfaced showing the authorities seizing an old Toyota Fortuner converted into a newer model to bypass this ban. This video has alarmed many owners who have similarly modified their cars.
The clip, posted on Instagram by Car Reels India, depicts a white Toyota Fortuner being towed away. The post sarcastically comments, "Yes, go ahead with the conversion of your Fortuner from old to new." This remark is directed at owners of older Fortuners who have updated their vehicles' appearances.
Some viewers might wonder if the seized Fortuner is indeed a type 1 model. The car in question is 12 years and 10 months old, confirming it is a first-generation model. Observers familiar with Fortuners can identify this by the alloy wheels. The type 2 Fortuner features multi-spoke alloy wheels, while the Legender model has diamond-cut wheels.
Additionally, the placement of doors and door handles on the third-generation model differs. The rear window of the seized Fortuner matches that of the type 1 model. The current generation, including the Legender, has a sleeker rear glass and quarter panel.

Conversions like this have become common in recent months. Many type 1 and type 2 Toyota Fortuners have been modified to resemble newer models by aftermarket shops. This trend is driven by the Fortuner’s reliability, with even first-generation models remaining in good condition.
However, owners often tire of their vehicle's old appearance. To refresh the look, they convert it to match the latest model. Numerous shops across the country offer such conversions, making it a widespread practice.

Many may question the legality of these conversions. Any exterior modification without RTO approval is illegal. Despite this, many converted Fortuners and Toyota Innova MPVs are on the roads. A well-done conversion makes it challenging to differentiate between a new car and a modified old one.
Issues arise at police checkpoints when authorities inspect the registration certificate. The ten-year ban on old diesel cars currently applies only to Haryana, U.P., and NCT, Delhi. Owners outside these areas are not yet affected.

DriveSpark Thinks
Owners of older Fortuners should be aware of the legal implications and the regulations in their respective states. As authorities continue to enforce these rules, more vehicles might face similar action.
