Revival In Sedan Sales: India Witnesses Notable Growth In January 2024

In the Indian automotive market, it has been observed that there has been a noticeable fluctuation in the demand for sedans. After experiencing a downturn in November and December 2023, sedan sales saw a significant rebound in January 2024, indicating a marked improvement in the segment's performance.

Revival in Sedan Sales

The data for January 2024 reveals that the total sales of the top 10 sedans amounted to 33,891 units, which represents a 7.45% increase compared to the 31,541 units sold in January 2023. This growth equates to an additional 2,350 units sold.

Furthermore, there was a 17.47% month-over-month (MoM) increase from the 28,850 units sold in December 2023. This upward trend marks the first instance of both year-over-year (YoY) and MoM growth in sedan sales since August 2023.

Top Performers in the Sedan Segment

Leading the sedan sales chart was the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, which sold 16,773 units in January 2024, marking a significant 48.21% YoY increase from the 11,317 units sold in January 2023. This accounted for a commanding 49.49% share of the total sedan sales.

The Dzire also saw a 19.70% MoM increase from the 14,012 units sold in December 2023. With the 2024 Dzire currently undergoing test rounds, its sales are anticipated to climb even higher post its expected launch in June 2024.

The Hyundai Aura secured the second position with 5,516 units sold in January 2024, reflecting a 19.03% YoY and a 44.70 percent MoM growth. Following closely was the Honda Amaze, recording sales of 2,972 units in the same period, albeit with a 46.74% decline YoY.

Surprising Shifts and Notable Growth

A noteworthy change in the rankings saw the Hyundai Verna climbing to the fourth position, outperforming the VW Virtus and Tata Tigor. The Verna experienced an impressive 118.29% YoY growth with 2,172 units sold in January 2024, and a staggering 205.06% MoM increase from December 2023.

While the VW Virtus showed a 36.26% YoY growth, the Tata Tigor/EV and Skoda Slavia witnessed declines in both YoY and MoM sales. Similarly, the Honda City and Maruti Ciaz faced declines, with the Honda City seeing a mere 0.99% MoM growth, and the Maruti Ciaz experiencing a significant dip in sales.

Contrastingly, the Toyota Camry, ranked tenth, saw a remarkable 428.81% YoY growth and a 73.33% MoM increase, showcasing a promising outlook for the model.
