SEADS Group Partners With Formula DRIFT To Enhance Drifting Opportunities In Southeast Asia

The Southeast Asia Drift Series (SEADS) is set to begin its inaugural rounds at the R33 Drift Track in the Philippines on December 7-8, 2024. This marks a significant collaboration between Formula DRIFT and SEADS Group, aiming to expand the sport's reach in Southeast Asia. The partnership will help develop local drivers and offer them a pathway to compete in the US Formula DRIFT series.

Formula DRIFT has a rich history in Southeast Asia, having broadcasted live events over a decade ago through Binter SG, ESPN, and Fox Sports. The organisation is also working on Affiliate programs in Taiwan and the Middle East to further globalise drifting. These efforts aim to bring more international talent into the sport and increase its global footprint.

Ryan Sage, President of Formula DRIFT, expressed enthusiasm about this new venture. "We’re extremely happy to welcome SEADS Group to the Formula DRIFT global community," he stated. Sage highlighted the potential for developing new driver talent and expanding participation from Southeast Asia. He emphasised that drifting is an exciting action sport with a growing international appeal.

Toni Arakaki, CEO and Co-founder of SEADS Group, shared his excitement about launching in the Philippines. "Southeast Asia Drift Series has been formed by likeminded drifters and organizers," he said. Arakaki acknowledged his partners from Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia for their roles in making this collaboration possible. He hopes for strong support from local communities as they aim to elevate Southeast Asian drivers' skills.

The SEADS schedule includes multiple rounds across different countries: after the Philippines, events will take place in Indonesia on February 15-16, 2025; Thailand on April 26-27, 2025; and Malaysia on July 5-6, 2025. This regional tour aims to engage fans and nurture local talent across Southeast Asia.

Pathway to US Competition

The agreement between Formula DRIFT and SEADS Group includes adherence to the Official Rulebook and driver development initiatives. The ultimate goal is to provide Southeast Asian drivers with a clear path to obtaining a Formula DRIFT Competition License in the United States. This opportunity could significantly enhance their careers by allowing them to compete on an international stage.

Formula DRIFT operates a three-tier partner system: Affiliate, Partner, and Licensing Series. Each level offers varying degrees of support and commitment from both parties involved. Becoming an Affiliate is considered the initial step towards achieving full licensing status, similar to what Formula DRIFT Japan currently holds.
