Rolls-Royce Marks Fourth Year Of Youth Mentorship With Dare To Dream Initiative
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has marked its fourth year collaborating with the Dare to Dream initiative, organised by the Love Local Jobs Foundation. This charity works with schools and leading employers in West Sussex. The programme aims to help Year 9 pupils from three local schools build confidence and overcome personal and academic challenges.
Fifteen members of the Rolls-Royce team have volunteered as mentors, guiding students from Chichester Free School, Bourne Community College, and Ormiston Six Villages Academy. Each mentor works closely with three pupils, sharing experiences and insights to help them navigate their future career paths.
This year, Rolls-Royce apprentices participated in the mentorship scheme for the first time. Their involvement provided a unique perspective for the pupils, as they could relate more closely to individuals who were recently in similar positions. The apprentices shared their journeys and offered practical advice on overcoming setbacks.
Mark Adams, Director of Human Resources at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, expressed satisfaction with the programme's impact. He stated, "This is now the fourth year we have been working with Dare to Dream and everyone involved has found the journey very rewarding, from the young people taking part to our own team members acting as mentors."
The mentorship programme includes visits to the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood. Here, participants experience various workshops and gain inspiration from seeing professionals at work. These visits aim to broaden their horizons beyond school and home environments.
Samantha Savage, Year 9 Leader at Bourne Community College, praised the initiative: "We are so very grateful to Rolls-Royce Motor Cars for the amazing opportunity for our students; to work closely with the ‘Dare to Dream’ team... The difference in students’ attitudes to the world of work has been noticeable."
Lydia Woodroff, HR Sustainability Business Partner at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, coordinates the project. She highlighted the benefits of showcasing diverse skills within Rolls-Royce: "The mentees had the chance to meet some of our Apprentices... We’re grateful for this opportunity to showcase the diverse range of skills utilised within our organisation."
Positive Impact on Students
The programme has had a significant positive impact on students' attitudes towards their future careers. Maddison Headland, an apprentice at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, shared her motivation for becoming a mentor: "I chose to become a Dare to Dream mentor as I think it is important for young people to understand what they are capable of achieving."
The mentoring sessions involve exploring pupils' beliefs about themselves and their surroundings. By sharing personal stories that often deviate from traditional paths, mentors demonstrate that many opportunities remain open despite challenges.
The collaboration between Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and Dare to Dream continues to inspire young minds. It helps them realise their potential while providing valuable insights into professional life. This ongoing partnership highlights Rolls-Royce's commitment to community engagement and youth development.
