Rockfort Engineering Unveils Advanced Battery Technology In Ariel E-Nomad Launch
Rockfort Engineering, specialists in advanced EV powertrain technology, have announced a partnership with Ariel Motor Company to develop the new Ariel E-Nomad. This project, funded by the Niche Vehicle Network (NVN), aims to produce an all-electric off-roader designed for low-volume series production. The collaboration builds on previous work supported by NVN, focusing on creating a production-ready vehicle.
Rockfort has developed a custom 450V, 41kWh Lithium-Ion battery system specifically for the E-Nomad. This battery includes integrated high-voltage power electronics and safety systems, making it easy to install and connect to the Nomad's existing electrical and chassis stability systems. The battery can deliver up to 210kW of power and supports both AC (Type 2) domestic charging and DC (CCS2) fast charging, allowing a bulk charge from 20% to 80% in under 25 minutes.
The E-Nomad battery weighs less than 300kg when fully assembled and features an advanced thermal conditioning system. This system optimises performance and range while extending the battery pack's life. Despite its high energy density, the battery is designed to meet the rugged demands of the E-Nomad, ensuring durability and reliability in various conditions.
The E-Nomad also showcases Rockfort’s new Pegasus V3 Lithium-Ion Battery Modules, which offer best-in-class energy density within a lightweight enclosure. These modules are designed to prioritise range and performance without adding unnecessary weight. They provide a flexible building block for designing any form of EV propulsion battery pack quickly.
Rockfort’s high-performance battery management electronics combine full powertrain control with integrated safety management functionality. This system offers multiple modes with tuneable performance characteristics, enhancing driveability. The Pegasus V3 architecture enables Rockfort to deliver cost-effective, production-ready powertrain solutions with high refinement levels in short timescales.
Future Prospects
The launch of this technology marks a significant milestone for Rockfort Engineering, signalling new growth opportunities and ambitions. Details about new investments and brand partnerships will be announced soon. Angus Lyon, Director at Rockfort, stated: "The launch of the Ariel E-Nomad marks the conclusion of many years of hard work by the team at Rockfort to develop our EV technologies. This fantastic car will be driving around at the CENEX LCV show at Millbrook this week marking the first public showing of both the E-Nomad and the Rockfort technologies that it contains."
Simon Saunders, Director at Ariel Motor Company, commented: "While the E-Nomad is a concept, it does show production intent for the vehicle and hints at just a small part of Ariel’s future. Once it has been through our usual, gruelling testing regime we could opt to add E-Nomad alongside its ICE Nomad 2 sibling, so we’ll take great interest in customer feedback on the concept car."
