RM 65-01 Automatic Split-Seconds Chronograph McLaren W1: A Fusion Of Performance And Precision
Richard Mille has unveiled the RM 65-01 McLaren Automatic Split-Seconds Chronograph W1. This is the fourth watch from its collaboration with McLaren, a British luxury supercar and motorsports company. The new McLaren W1 supercar, which inspired this watch, follows the iconic McLaren F1 and P1 models. It aims to elevate performance in every aspect.
The RM 65-01 McLaren W1 reflects the high-performance features of the car it complements. Its design and materials mirror the cutting-edge attributes of the McLaren W1 supercar. This collaboration underscores shared values like pushing performance limits through passion and human connection.
The RM 65-01 McLaren W1 is powered by Richard Mille's RMAC4 movement. This automatic chronograph operates at a high frequency of 5Hz or 36,000 vibrations per hour. Such precision allows for recording elapsed times down to one-tenth of a second.
The movement includes a vertical clutch and two six-column wheels for smooth chronograph activation. A rapid winding system recharges its 60-hour power reserve quickly using an orange Quartz TPT® push piece. The watch's robustness makes it suitable for daily use.
The RM 65-01 McLaren W1 features a Carbon TPT® case inspired by the car's lines. The case measures 43.84 x 49.94 x 16.19 mm, wrapping around the automatic split-seconds chronograph movement like the car's bodywork envelops its engine.
The bezel design posed significant technical challenges, taking nine months and eight prototypes to perfect. Its upper part is just five-tenths of a millimetre thick at its thinnest point, making it Richard Mille's thinnest bezel ever produced.
Driving Dynamics
This driver's watch includes a 'function selector' crown that mimics a transmission selector with options for winding, date setting, or hand-setting positions. The crown is made from grade 5 titanium with rubber coating in McLaren papaya orange.
Chronograph push pieces and rapid winding button are mounted on titanium frames inspired by lightweight seats in McLaren supercars. The papaya orange rubber strap reflects aerodynamic angles seen on the car's engine cover and spoilers.
Partnership Success
Andrea Bermudez, Global Marketing Director at McLaren Automotive, stated: "The W1 was designed to give the driver everything they need and nothing they don’t." Julien Boillat from Richard Mille added that their partnership has grown strong due to shared high-tech specifications and design language.
Since their partnership began in January 2016, Richard Mille and McLaren have released three previous watches: RM 50-03 Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph (2017), RM 11-03 Automatic Flyback Chronograph (2018), and RM 40-01 Automatic Tourbillon Speedtail (2021).
