Renault Teams Up With WeRide For Level 4 Autonomous Mini Buses
Renault is set to develop Level 4 autonomous mini buses in collaboration with WeRide, a company known for its expertise in self-driving technology. Renault already offers autonomous driving features in some of its high-end car models, aiming to provide a superior driving experience and ensure safety.
Renault's partnership with WeRide focuses on creating an autonomous mini bus. This collaboration extends to manufacturing large-scale commercial vehicles with Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities. Currently, autonomous driving features are primarily available in personal vehicles like cars.

Autonomous driving technologies range from Level 0 to Level 5, with ongoing work on Level 6. However, personal vehicles typically use Level 2 and Level 2 Plus technologies.
These systems can adapt to the environment, taking actions such as braking, slowing down, and changing lanes to prevent accidents. Renault aims to incorporate these features into mini buses.
Many companies offer autonomous features only in personal-use vehicles. Renault is entering the public transport sector to provide high-level safety and autonomous driving capabilities. This initiative is part of the Mach 2 project, which began in 2023.
The development of these autonomous mini buses is expected to be completed soon, with public operation anticipated by 2026.
DriveSpark Thinks
Level 4 autonomous technology allows the vehicle to operate independently, performing tasks such as picking up passengers, stopping at designated points, braking, and responding to signals without a driver.
Whether these robotized mini buses will be available in India remains uncertain. However, Level 2 cars are already sold in India, and vehicles with ADAS features are widely available. It is expected that autonomous heavy vehicles will also become available in the future.
